How dare you make a joke about a thread so serious. You should be ashamed of yourself.

I highly doubt its lightning..

This is not an isolated incident. Arkansas, Louisiana, Kentucky, Manitoba, Japan, Chile, South Korea, India, etc.

Not to mention all the dead fish they have been finding.

A lot of those have been proven to be avian flu and are old news. It has happened in Sweden, however, but it was only 50 - 100.

I will say, though, it's kind of weird Environmental Services wore hazmat suits when picking up the dead birds in the States. Is that normal procedure?

Odd.

Maybe I'm under thinking it, but I wonder if the trauma they're finding on these birds was caused by them falling out of the sky and crashing on the ground?

I wanted to know how many birds died from other manmade causes. Here are those numbers (based on the most common annual estimates I found):

http://skepticblog.org/2010/01/07/wi...-of-the-skies/

That pales in comparison to natural bird deaths. About one third of all birds die in collisions with natural objects, like rocks, trees, or the ground. Most of these are young birds learning to fly.

2007 Incident in Texas:

http://www.time.com/time/health/arti...582197,00.html

Five dozen birds fell from the sky earlier this month talk shows and chatrooms were ablaze with theories and outrage over what killed Austin's grackles.

Experts at Texas A&M University . . . say the grackles fell prey to parasites and a sudden dip in temperatures, struck down by a double whammy of bad luck in the bird world.

"Most wild birds have some parasites, but these birds were overwhelmed," said Lev G. Gayle, executive director of A&M's veterinary diagnostic lab. Autopsies revealed that the birds had parasites in every organ in their body, even in skeletal muscle and their brains, in a few cases. All wild birds have some level of parasites in their bodies, Gayle said. It was likely these 60, which appeared not to have eaten recently, were the most vulnerable and weakened of a large flock numbering in the hundreds.

Increasing parasite levels made them weaker and more susceptible to sudden temperature change.

http://www.cnn.com/2011/US/01/03/ark...rds/index.html

The thousands of birds that fell from the sky just before midnight New Year's Eve in Arkansas likely died from massive trauma, according to a preliminary report released Monday.

The birds, most of which were dead when they were found, were red-winged blackbirds and starlings. They were found within a one-mile area of Beebe, about 40 miles northeast of Little Rock, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission said.

"Further tests will be done to rule out other causes, but the birds suffered from acute physical trauma leading to internal hemorrhage and death. There was no sign of any chronic or infectious disease," the report said, according to the game and fish commission.

As of Saturday, between 4,000 and 5,000 birds had been found dead, said Stephens.
Karen Rowe, an ornithologist for the game and fish commission, said the incident is not that unusual and is often caused by a lightning strike or high-altitude hail.
