Delicious and Different Beers Available in Calgary?

Alright CP, 'tis the Season for AMAZING BEER!!

I've got a few weeks off for the holidays and will be home-bound most of the time entertaining family.

I like to try different beers, so I am hoping this thread can be a recommendations list of sorts, where people recommend beers that don't start with Molson, Coors or Rickards.

the only rules are:

• The beer must be available in Calgary!
• You must post where it can be purchased in Calgary, so that others can enjoy your suggestion!
  

I'll begin

• Wild Rose Pink Velvet - Must be served at a taphouse, where they can mix 1/2 Velvet Fog and 1/2 Wraspberry

I'm a big Newcastle fan. I can't remember the pub's name in Panorama, but they have it on tap, and it's fantastic.

Haven't had it for a few years, i will add it to my list to revisit.

There's a great liquor store in my neighborhood called "Aspen Wine and Spirits" up in Aspen landing. Lots of different beers there, so I am hoping I can find a lot of the recommendations this thread generates there!

Surprisingly, the West Market Square Coop also has a good selection of off the beaten path beers too, so between these two store I hope I can make this a delicious, drunk holiday season!

I don't have a sophisticated beer palate and tend to stick to Budweiser (ya, I know). The last two beers that I tried (and enjoyed) were:

Brewhouse A budget recommendation that I only see it at Superstore, but it's a terrific little Pilsener.

Big Rock's Gopher is a pretty decent lager.....with the same quality vs price as their other offerings.

Really looking forward to this thread filling out - great topic!

In the spirit of the thread, here are three beers I tried which I really did not like:



Innis and Gunn rum oak cask finished beers. I really like rum and I really like scottish ale, but these just didn't do it for me...

Sort of how I really like girls and I really like rugby, but rugby playing girls are generally not good looking instead of being 2 x awesome = double awesome, as you would expect.

+ 1 for new castle I am going to try the pink velvet since Original joes has it on special (velvet fog and rasperry not together) on tuesdays when I go for wings

I didn't mind Big Rock's Gopher either... A little too mellow for what I was expecting, but it was good.

Definitely going to try the Pink Velvet one of these days, Velvet Fog is one of my favourite beers.


COOP Liquor stores sell Granville Island Winter Ale. Had it on tap when I went to the Olympics so it was nice to find it in Calgary...now I just need somewhere that has it on tap (any suggestions?).

Tastes like candy, not something you'd want to drink every day but 'tis the Season.

Back on the Wild Rose front their Cherry Porter is very good.

Do it - "Pink Velvet" is amazing. A group of us order it in droves at the Marda Loop OJ's (Original Joes). If the waitress looks at you sideways when you order it, just explain what it is, though I haven't had to explain it ever.

Nice recommendation! Aspen Hills Liquor (and probably coop now too?) has Grandville's Cypress Honey Ale, which I love! More beer flavour than the bland beer with a squirt of honey from a can that is the Sleeman's Honey Brown. It also has a nice, crisp honey subtexture that makes it feel alot more authentic than Sleeman's et al's honey beers, which taste like syrup was dumped into a cast off batch of beer to mask it.

Willowpark liquor on Macleod still has a few cases of Granville Island Winter Ale left. It's a nice seasonal beer, with a sort of chocolaty flavor.



They also have a couple of Belgian Christmas ales for sale, in 75CL bottles.

This is a maple beer I tried at a resturant by olympic plaza forget name. It is called Amber's Sap Vampire Maple Lager. It has a nice sweet taste to it. You wouldn't be able to drink it for a whole night but I highly reccomend trying one!

For winter beer, I would go with this:



For something on tap, I would go with this, available at Ship and Anchor, Rose and Crown, and probably a few other places. Delicious!

Do not drink winterpsice without a gingersnap cookie it is brutal. But when you add the cookie it is magical!

The barrels they use are from US whisky - does Scotland even make rum?

Cactus Club on Macleod had it on tap last winter. I'd assume they would have it again this year. May be worth calling them to find out.

If they do have some it's a win-win, as the food there is really tasty.

I meant scottish ale (beer) and rum, not scottish rum and beer.
