Depending on the issue, see if you can get the exam rescheduled. Go talk to a doctor, counselor, medical examiner/coroner or whomever is appropriate IMMEDIATELY. Get a note, talk to your prof and cross your fingers.

If you "re-do" a course in the next semester any chance you replace the F with a new grade?
I can't see them listing the course twice with 2 different results...do they?

Its ridiculous. The university is just trying to make their students look smarter. Stupid Macleans magazine. If I suck harder than everyone else and fail, give me a freakin F. Don't pander to me with some C+. Similarly, if I get like 85% don't lump me in with some 75% student. I kicked his ass. Reward me.

I once missed an exam because of a flat tire on my way there (true story), but after I talked to the associate dean and explained my story he allowed me to write the deferred exam. I would contact your prof and the associate dean of your department ASAP and just have a chat, the very worst they can tell you is no. But be prompt about it and most importantly don't let it happen again. Also, don't lie to them and make up some phony excuse with a doctor's note. As much as you'd like to think these guys don't follow up and do their homework, they do, they will find out if you're lying, and you will only dig yourself into a deeper hole by getting caught for academic misconduct.
I also got an F, a C-, and a D in a semester, got put on academic warning, and dropped out because I just couldn't handle the stress. Had a minor life crisis because of it. But I came back a year later, re-took the courses, and through a lot of hard work I got passing grades. The old grades don't get 'erased' but anyone looking at your transcript will be able to see that you re-took the courses and made the effort to improve instead of hanging your head and giving up. And while an F on your record never looks good, the life experience you gain from re-taking the course and resolving yourself to getting a better mark counts for quite a bit when applying to certain grad schools, including the UofC. The actual effect of the F on your GPA won't be that harsh once you've completed 40+ courses.
The bottom line is, people make mistakes. A bad grade or two is not the end of the world, what really matters is how you rebound from it and learn from the experience.

An F just drags down your weighted average GPA. Thats about it. Not the end of the world.

More importantly, why are you even wasting time on CP? Get your ass to the dean.

the point was that if it is ANYTHING and the doc signs it, then your good.
It's the same kinda thing that can get you off work without repercussions. If a medical physician deems you unable to do something for a certain amount of time, then whoever you submit it to does not have authority or discretion to rip it up.

What is this odd 4-point grading system you speak of?

Does Ontario still use the 13-point grading system- does anyone know?
In the States-
90-100= A 4 points
80-90= B 3 points
70-80= C 2 points
60-70= D 1 point
60 and below = F
Looks like it works this way in Alberta too?

Really? When I went to U of C most profs said a simple doctors note wouldn't be enough of an excuse to miss a final exam. Unless you were in the hospital, you wrote the final at the time specified or got an F.
I never tested this theory though.

How the hell do you do so bad on a final worth half the grade and still end up a A-? That's ridiculous. I failed my Macro Econ final (around 34% too) and still ended up with a C. haha, I guess never showing up for the 2nd half of the semester would do that. Lesson learned, haven't skipped since.
I missed a mid-term once because my alarm didn't go off, told the truth and I couldn't get it deferred. It wasn't a good excuse, but at least I didn't lie.

I thought the exam was fricking hard personally... and thought I was definitely going to fail... or barely pass... but I guess everyone felt the exam was difficult too, and yeah, I cut every single STATS class this semester..

No idea. The schools out here in Victoria use a 9 point system:
90-100 = A+ 9 points
85-89 = A 8
80-84 = A- 7
77-79 = B+ 6
73-76 = B 5
70-72 = B- 4
65-69 = C+ 3
60-64 = C 2
50-59 = D 1
You then take your marks and multiply it by the amount of credits/hours each course contains, then divide by the total number of credits. It seems unnecessarily complicated.

But I still managed a A- which is so ****ed up.... I'm thinking if the class average was THAT low for me to pull off an A- with a 34% on the exam.. then I guess the exam was THAT difficult to every one else.... NEVER taking stats again...

Interesting- thank you. I haven't seen a 9 point system but this looks like the same measure in which I was graded throughout elementary school and University in Canada (the percentages line up with the grades).
It's interesting, they make things so much simpler here in the states. The 4 point system used at the 'College' level (We all know that in Canada 'College' may be a bit different than University), is also implemented throughout the entire elementary school/middle school/high school system.
90-100 for an A may seem like a bit much, but here they give so much homework/extra credit/assignments. And there are always opportunities to make up your work if you miss it or re-do tests. The work load is tremendous, but the schools give credit for handing in daily homework. My 14 year old son just finished his 2nd semester in 8th grade and he was graded on 81 assignments in his algebra class- just for 2nd semester.
I received my Masters in Psych here at UMKC and I had a 4.0 GPA- because it was sooo easy. And probably because unlike when I got my undergrad degree in ON, I wasn't drunk every night. (shrug)

Hm... that's weird... Here at Carleton in Ottawa, they use a 12 point system.

I think it's important to know if the F was one of your required courses in your declared degree or if it was just an option. Sometimes failing one of your core courses can be a bad thing from what I remember reading..
