I didn't realize there was anything below a B.

An F should be brought before a graduate counsellor.
However, if you were having personal issues, provided they're serious enough, you can provide documentation that supports why you were absent and they will revise.
Also, was the test required to finish the class? Sometimes if you get an F, it doesn't necessarily mean an F, especially if it's only worth like 20% of your class grade.

Does this mean I'll have to get straight A's in every other course from now on in order to pull it back up? Or is there nothing I can do to get it above 3 now?
Also is there a possibility that I can replace the grade?
Thanks

I went to University in Ontario, but I know I had to miss a final once and they gave me an 'Incomplete' which would have eventually shown up as an F. However, I talked to the Prof and he let me rewrite the final. Maybe you could do the same? It's worth a try anyway.

how long ago was the exam?
get to a doctor fast with a good story that you can get a doc's note to excuse for for the last days important event. say you've been constipated a week or something and you can't sit in a chair
you have 24 hours usually to submit note, then you get rebooked

You could also try to get a withdrawn put onto your transcript

You can always try to get that exam deferred. Depending on your personal reason. I've seen them defer exams for some pretty crappy reasons so keep your hope up. If you retake the course, they'll average the marks out between the two so your highest chance is a B.
An F really @$%# everything up. But depends what you're in/what you're going for.

F's are permanent, you can't replace them.
And if you know how to calculate GPA, you can answer all your other questions.
Without diving into your personal issues, I hope they were serious, because you just threw away 3 months of hard work.

It's too late now isn't it? The withdrawl deadline was a month or so ago.

If I was a prof and I received that note, I would rip it up. Worst excuse ever.

I was never bright enough for uni' but I was bright enough to realise that if you know you are going to eff things up at work you really want to go talk to your boss before you eff things up and minimise the damage.

B, B, A-, A-, F is a 2.68 semester.
Not the end of the world. I know people with far worse. You won't be put on academic probation for that.
Nothing's going to happen, you're just going to have to take the class again. Good luck.

You'll be put on double secret probation and your draft board will be notified?

From my experience, most profs have a honest interest in seeing their students succeed. I wouldn't just assume that you're hooped until you talk to him or her. There is a chance that they won't care, but it is worth a try.

Along these lines, when the heck did a B- become an F? I'm at Haskayne now and B- is deemed unacceptable. They just curve everyone around the "new" B- to A+ spread anyways...why not just curve it around F to A+?
I'm also new to letter grades. Always had percentages.

What will happen? Nothing at all. Your GPA goes down a bit.
If you can't get it deferred, which in my exp the u of c is pretty anal about you can take the course again but I'm not sure if that makes the F go away or averages it or what.
Think of it this way. Your degree and final GPA is comprised of 40 courses. A zero in one class will hardly affect the end result.
Only 2 reasons to get worked up over your overall GPA going down by that little. You are going for grad school, you are getting a job where you know they'll look at your transcripts and you know you won't get the job because of a single F.
Short term I guess if you need a certain GPA to qualify for scholarship money is the only reason I can think of.
Well that and you wasted 4 months and $600.
Over your whole degree it might lower you GPA by .075. So a 3 becomes 2.925. FTR I'm no expert at calculating GPA. Thing is I'm pretty sure you get no credit for it so I'm not sure how that works.

Welcome to grade reform, where everyone is bunched together to make the average student more appealing to employers while at the same time making it more difficult for those who are above average to stand out. At least they haven't gone as far as some law schools and done away with grades completely.
