Office Christmas Parties
I'm going to a real office Christmas party for the first time tonight. It's formal. I had never gone to one before because either I worked at a really small company which never had one or worked at a really big company and the party was limited. For example only 800 capacity for 3000 employees.
So what should I expect? Do people really go crazy? It's open bar!
I'm pretty timid, even though it's not work, it's still work right? I wouldn't want to embarass myself in front of managers etc...
You guys have any good stories?

Expect the unexpected. People will be hammered, including executives. Enjoy it and make sure you don't drive. Milk the company for some extra taxi chits and tour the city. Company functions with open bar are the best.

If you're not the boss, be very careful.
In larger companies someone is always watching or listening, and the slightest thing will offend them.
When I go to company functions, I don't drink, because I'm a lousy mean spirited dry humoured drunk, and that guy who pissed me off two years ago might find himself in a dumpster at the end of the night.
You have to be so careful of what you do especially when the economy is tough.
Its ok to drink, get funny get tipsy, but the people that get absoutely blasted are taking a major risk.

After a wild Xmas party at the large law firm in Vancouver where I articled, the lawyers' wives forced the firm to build a seperate cafeteria for the support staff.

Do you drink well? I dont understand why people would get hammered at a company function. It's not high school.

We had ours last weekend. The open bar led to a $12,000 bar bill. It's not a huge company either.

My advice- don't go. LOL Every single 'official' office Christmas party I've ever gone to has ended in disaster on some level or another. I work for a small IT company now (only 6 people), and we went to dinner and had a few drinks which was really nice. However, when you get a large group of people drinking, the normal office gossip tends to come up- except it's unfiltered.
For example- I've been working for this company for 6 years, but before that I was a manager for Enterprise (The Rental Car Place) and we had a company Christmas party for the entire Kansas City area. There were probably 2000 people there, it was formal- and it was of course open bar and 'casino night.' My 'boss' ended up sleeping with one of the new girls who just graduated from College and everyone found out about it. The next day it was posted on the Enterprise message boards, and his wife (who had just had a baby and moved from Seattle to KC to support him) found out about it. She took the baby, left him, he lost his job and ran away to Vegas with the College grad where he apparently gambles for a living. Seriously.
Moral of the story- Big Company Christmas parties end in tragedy when everyone is drunk. If you go, make polite conversation, don't engage in gossip and don't bring any attention to yourself. If you want to have some real fun- leave and go to a bar and THEN talk about everyone!

Our company was at the Banff Springs this year for the weekend. Everyone got trashed and then we had parties back at the rooms. Baller.

I've always followed the advice of "drink as much as your boss, and you'll be safe". A couple years ago that was a TON. This year, my new boss wasn't quite as hard on the booze, so it was a calmer night for sure.
I must work for a boring company because there's no crazy afterparties or debauchery to be heard of.

I've noticed that management tends to be the first drunks at Christmas parties. Once they're drunk, you can get drunk.
