DLP vs. Plasma vs. LCD Tv's. Which is better?

I've seen it in person, and WOW! was it a beautiful TV. So crisp and clear. They had a display model a few weeks back at the Sunridge store that would be worth seeing it it's still there.

Okay, I know nothing about all this stuff. I listened to the spiel at Leon's while furniture shopping of Plasma vs DLP vs LCD and it sounded like they were all pretty much the same thing. Best Buy here I come though.

Is Samsung any good? I picked LG because it was a name I know and think is (for the most part) decent quality. A little more expensive I guess but I've learned my lesson with cheap electronics (Emachines SUCK!).

Yowch! stay away from the Samsung or any other 1080P! Like i said that wheel spins so fast it will crap out on you sooner rather than later. With a LCD rear projection all you have to do is change the light bulb when it goes. I'm sure it's a bit more difficult than it sounds. hehe

I think Samsung has a pretty good name in the TV market.

DLP isn't any more or less reliable than LCD.. they both have their strengths and weaknesses. It used to be LCD had difficulty with decent black levels and DLPs had problems with the rainbow effect, but current generation TVs on both technologies have come a long way (if you stick with good brands).

Wow they sure went down in price. My co-worker just got the 60 inch one and she loves it! Of course she is a girl so she probably doesn't know anything about tv's. hehe

Hey did you guys ever goto futureshop back in Feb/March of this year. I went to 3 different ones and each of them setup that Samsung pedestal DLP and all 3 of them looked sooo crappy ass. That was their flagship product but it looked so horrible. It looked like they were using an antenna to get their tv reception. hehe.

Well, I guess it's going to be the 55" LCD. I like the size and the price, and it's a good name.

Seeing as I spend time dickering with Koreans on a daily basis I'm going to dicker like a Korean dickerer.

This is what I bought last week which retails at $3200, after some haggling i got it at 3000 with the stand retail at 450 and an extended 3 yr warrenty.
All in all it's got hott picture and great sound, watching your dvd's on it is unbelievable.

I believe the verdict is nice new HD TV = expensive and will probably crap out 10 times quicker than a $200 standard TV.

Seriously we bought a CRT 36" widescreen Sony Wega last year and love it. Not top of the line or Plasma or anything but still a beautiful picture on that TV. BUT, this is the second one...the first one lasted all of 10 minutes before blowing up (I'm pretty sure it had to do with the delivery guys when they dropped it taking it out of the truck). Sony replaced it within 24 hours not problems.

Well Cow, from what I understnd Plasma is old technology, has maintenance problems, is cheaper than LCD or DLP, and therefore not as good.

DLP is good for sports (doesn't blur like LCD), but new LCD technology is better.
DLP bulbs supposedly last about 10% longer than LCD
Both are pricey, but getting cheaper.

Simple question: Why would people spend thousands on a TV that blurs sports?

The biggest problem is the technology is changing so fast. I "think" plasma is up to generation 6 or 7, and problems are being corrected every generation. Same with LCD, the refresh rates and contrast levels seem to be getting better almost daily.

So it seems to me that almost any research more than 6 months old is out of date. I'm interested in a HD big screen it seems that everything I used to know is now wrong.

I have both an LCD projection and a plasma. Both are great.
Don't buy a LCD tv though. They are overpriced and small. The only advantage is that it is energy efficient.

I'm still not sold on DLP technology though. Both the LCD projection and DLP uses a lightbulb that can be easily replaced(just a damn expensive bulb) but with the DLP you have the color spin wheel that spins at 9000 rpms. That can't be good in the long run.

One of the drawbacks of the LCD projection is that the black is not always black enough. I notice it on my LG but it doesn;t bother me at all. That Hitachi one Loosh bought is the probably the best one out there right now. I'd get that one now!

Oh and Plasmas have a life span. Once it starts to go, around 30000-40000 viewing hours you cannot fix it.

Exactly. People wouldn't. Sports fans and action movie fans would never buy them, which is why the technology addressed those concerns long ago.

The way I see it is this:

Projection vs Flat panels
-Do you care if your TV looks cool, even when turned off? Flat panel
-Do you have space concerns? Flat Panel
-Do you want a bigger TV for less cost? Projection

I can't speak to the projection debate of LCD vs DLP as I've never shopped for one.

But Flat Panels (I have space concerns) are either LCD or Plasma
-Are you getting a TV less than about 36"? LCD is cheaper
-Are you getting a TV bigger than that? Plasma
-Is one better than the other? Not really. Many give a slight edge to LCD, but buy whatever is cheaper.

People will always defend what they buy. I bought an LCD TV because I was looking for something very slim that wouldn't stick infront of my window looking out to the mountains and I wanted something in the 32" range. Its perfect for what I needed. My parents wanted something that would look cool (they just dumped a whole bunch of money in furniture) for their place and were looking at 40" plus. I suggested a Plasma, and thats what the ended up and they love it. If I was getting something for a basement, probably DLP or plasma, although I prefer flat panel pictures to projection because of the viewing angle and brightness. But thats just me.

Actually a small LCD is much cheaper than a small Plasma, and almost all reviews you will encounter give a slight edge to LCD. Really they are very similar in advantages and disadvantages though.

Yeah sorry. That assumption was based on my research 8 months ago. I'm sure they are alot cheaper now.
