Default MP3 Help

I went out tonight and purchased an MP3 player, never had one of these things before. I was looking for a new Walkman, but I guess they were out or something. (weird, huh?)

Anyways, like I said I've never had one of these things before, so this is all rather new to me. I charged it for a little while then put a song on it just to give it a little test. It played, but it sounded like they (the band) were in a fish bowl or something like that. I was wondering if that's just due to the battery not being charged enough, or what..? (I charged it for about 10-15 minutes prior to giving it a quick test... I was excited, haha)

And that's basically it, just wanted to know if the battery charge has an effect on the quality of the music. I hate taking stuff back, so I hope...

Depending on the brand I can help you. When you are doing the setup of your MP3 player, in the downloading software there should be an option to control what quality you want the mp3s to be.

If it is a simpler brand that may just be the quality of the device or you may want to invest in some decent headphones.

Really the battery charge should not really affect sound quality. usually if a unit has a low batter, it tells you and shuts off.
It just could be your mp3 player sounds like it's in a fishbowl. Are you using hr supplied earphones? try some others

I'd say it's the earphones as well. Are they plugged in all the way? (Sounds silly, but I know it's a common problem that leads to the fishbowl sound). I also second trying another set of headphones.

One more thing though, how long should I generally leave it plugged into my computer to charge? The dude at The Source told me fully charged I could get a good 4 or 5 hours outta it.

Only 4 or 5? Yikes! I must've really hit jackpot then. I just won an MP3 player and fully charged I can get up to 50 hours.

This is what I won (black not red):

Pretty much all products recommend that you fully charge the battery for the first time before you begin using it. Also, while you don't have to (depending on the battery) it is recommended you let the battery completely die (when the prodcut tells you to recharge it) and fully charge the battery again. This is just to get the maximum usage out of the battery.

That is true for NiCad or NiMH, but not for Lithium-Ion (Li-ION). With newer batteries it is recommended that you don't fully discharge them since they don't get a memory and don't like a deep discharge. The odd time won't hurt it, but from what I have seen, it is suggested that once it gets down to 20% do a recharge.

Trial and error. Only took a few minutes to get it fully charged.

And bobblehead is correct about Lithium-Ion batteries, which I did a little research on shortly after buying the MP3 player (it runs off a Li-Ion battery). I basically found the same thing.

Thanks for all the help. This thing is no bigger then a stack of three or four loonies, and weighs much less, impressive....

I just bought the new iPod video for my wifes birthday. It was $397 and has 30 gigs of space. I had no idea what she wanted just a MP3 player for the gym, but I got her the best. Is it worth the money or did I get hosed because of the name brand recognition. 30 gigs is alot of friggen space for the bad music she likes! But I was sold on the whole picture album / video aspect of it. Can you actually convert DVD's and watch them on this?
I don't know how great that would be, considering a personal DVD player with a 7.5" LCD can be had for as low as $150 these days.
Just wondering if anyone has these and if the new video features will actually get used. Is it worth the price considering a 4 gig iPod nano is 299?

Matter of opinion and amount of music.

Personally, I think you just wasted almost $300. There's nothing wrong with an MP3 player that can carry 100-200 songs max. Cause honestly, who the heck needs an ipod that can hold 5,000 songs?? How could anyone possibly have that many songs that they even like???

Lithium ION will lose full length.. usually pretty quickly. With any battery it's best to fully drain it before recharging, regardless of type.

That is wrong.

See the Wikipedia

Quote:
Li-ion batteries irreversibly lose approximately 20% capacity per year from the time they are manufactured, even when unused. (6% at 0 °C, 20% at 25 °C, 35% at 40 °C. When stored at 40% charge level, these figures are reduced to 2%, 4%, 15% at 0, 25 and 40 degrees Celsius respectively.) Every (deep) discharge cycle decreases their capacity.

If its for the gym.. and she's not exactly a huge music buff I think you are better off getting the Nano

You can NOT convert dvd's to watch on the ipod video (well not yet anyways) and even if you could they would take up a hell of a lot of space ... and you have to question whether she will use the video .. does she travel lots, public transportation that sort of thing the nano still has a color screen so you can still look at pictures/album art with it

Then theres the gym issue.. even though the ipod videos are smaller than the original ipods they are still a little bit bulky to use in the gym, belt clips work alright but if you get an arm band to use with the nano you can barley even tell its there, way more convenient to work out with

I got a 40 gig iRiver, and I love having all my music with me, but for the gym, I kinda wish I had a nano or a shuffle or something equivilent.
My hd player is just a bit big I find for the gym...
