Niagara Falls with the tap turned off

The stark images reveal North America's iconic - and most powerful - waterfall to be almost as dry as a desert.
In June 1969, U.S. engineers diverted the flow of the Niagara River away from the American side of the falls for several months.

I remember that story, when the water stopped flowing it was the middle of the night and all of the people in the town woke up due to the missing constant rumble they always heard.

Has the Canadian falls ever stopped? This is the American side ... I know it's iced over in the past, but it sounds like the water just ends up on our side.

Looks like the first pic is the Canadian side and the second pic is the American side- but could be wrong?
EDIT- sorry, saw first post- guess both are the American side.

The Canadian side is waaaay nicer. They might as well close the US side permanently.

Horseshoe falls (The "Canadian" side) is actually where the border is - so it's half thiers.
And yeah the view is nicer from the Canadian side, as long as you don't turn around and see the monstrosity that NF, Ontario, is. Kitschy tourist crap everywhere.
The US side is a very quiet natual state park, and I love it there. It's 180 degrees from what you see on the Canadian side, and you can get up close and personal on the "under the falls" tours, unlike on the Canadian side.
That being said, NF, NY is a dump and home to a large proportion of the US EPA's superfund sites.

Incorrect. The Horseshoe Falls is 100% Canadian.

You can get an 'under the falls' tour on the Canadian side. In fact, last Christmas I took some American friends 'home' and we took the tour (first time I had bothered to do it). It's pretty cool.

Yeah, I've done it too - the Canadian one seemed so crappy compared. There was that little ledge and the 'cutouts' in the concrete walls. On the US side you almost were taking a shower! It wasn't that close, but they had this great walkway set up all over the rocks. I'll still take the US side for the peace and "quiet".
Nothing will ever live up to Superman honeymooning there though!
