Pretty sure they get nothing for Overbay, though they do for Downs, however on the likely scenario that the Angels sign Beltre, the Jays' picks from them drop down.

Yep, Jays also get picks from Buck and Olivo signings (Class B Free Agents). When ever Gregg signs Jays will obtain another pick (Class B).

Hopefully the Angels decide not to sign any more free agents....

Its rumoured to be a 1 year deal with a club option on a 2nd year....

Not much risk involved, I would bet, Jeff Lawrie will be converted to 3rd Base in AAA this year. Will be promoted to Majors in September or in the following year.

He hit quiet good over the last 6 weeks. Nothing like having a power bat to stick in DH and fill in for injuries.

I like this move. It brings a known quantity back into the lineup, and he can play 3 positions (3B/1B/DH) and provides a lot of pop in his bat.

His stats for last season projected over 600 AB - 38 HR 92 RBI 29 DB .244 AVG .787 OPS

That could be a bargain if he hits like that and remains healthy.

They're planning on using him primarily as a DH/1B so it won't have much of an impact.

If Encarnacion is used as a 1B/DH against left handed pitching than it's probably fine. Smaller payroll teams can't just pay a guy 15 million to play a position like that every day, but if you're innovative enough you can get a guy who can be a 850 to 900 OPS producer against left handed or right handed pitching for a lot less and do the platoon thing.

Encarnacion seems like a good fit as the back-up/platoon 1B/DH.

Lind simply isn't good enough against lefties to warrant a complete starting role. Last year he had a miserable .341 OPS against lefties in 137 ABs. His last 3 years total against lefties his OPS is only .607 (compared to .883 against righties). Meanwhile, Encarnacion is basically the exact opposite and should fit well replacing Lind. It doesn't hurt to have a guy who can play 3B (albeit not very well) on the bench considering that's a position where the Jays still have big question marks.

Not sure there is big question marks at 3rd, John MacDonald, Jose Bastista and Encarnacion all can play 3rd.... I would think Brett Lawrie is the future 3rd Baseman for the Jays.

I would still guess Encarnacion will platoon at 3rd and Lind will be the every day 1st Baseman.

EDIT....

John McDonald is far from a legitimate option at third - the guy can't hit well enough to be a starting shortstop and there's a big gap from the offense expected at SS and a corner IF position.

Bautista is more than capable at 3rd base, but based on AA's comments the Jays clearly envision him as a RFer moving forward (who will occasionally move around the diamond due to injuries).

Encarnacion is good enough at 3rd too, but all the talk seems to be about him playing 1B/DH and I'd imagine that is coming from sources inside the Blue Jays.

Lawrie is the 3B of the future, but the guy hasn't taken an AB in AAA yet and won't get a sniff at the MLB until September call-ups I'd say.

Yep, I agree but I would also say next season is another "reloading" year for the Jays.

The signing of Encarnacion is a short term solution (not sure if this fellow is anything more than a bench player for next season).

Jays will most likely place a young pitchers like Drabek in the Rotation. A fellow like Stewart may get a shot in the rotation.

A player like Lawrie is 1 year away but that is okay.... As the Jays have time.

They need to keep trying to gather the draft picks and keep signing the prospects....

let's hope so....as you can see currently the jays look like they have to choose between defense (mcdonald) or offense (encarnacion) at 3b (or perhaps hill to 3b, mcdonald at 2b)

Who most likely will plat third for the Jays this season? I've heard some talk of them moving Aaron Hill over to third...

Advanced statistics suggest Hill is an excellent defensive second baseman.

It doesn't make sense to make that change.

I'm hoping Lawrie does make it next year.

Sounds like he's got the stick, plug him in as starting third baseman and have Bautista and E5 back him up and get a journeyman in AAA.

If he struggles then the crowd teaches some humility and if he's solid then great!

I don't think that type of personality should be added to a young roster after two seasons of personal frustration. Let him shape the team working with Wells and Macdonald, instead of potentially butting heads with Snider and Romero when they're our lead dogs.
