Wow... It's impossible to watch a rent a movie with this thing. It just loads for hours. Apple is sucking hard on this product.

I noticed this when I was googling for answers to my HD problem. Seems like a pretty extreme issue to not address.

Just with the new firmware? I've rented a few and they're ready to watch in a minute or two.

The problem I was reading about was on the new firmware with renting HD stuff.

So my wife got me an Apple TV for Christmas, and I am thinking about jail breaking it.
I was wondering if there was something I should/could do before hand so I can restore it to its current state afterwards if I find it isn't working right etc.

So we're strongly considering cancelling Shaw this week and doing all of our TV watching through netflix and on DVD/Blu Rays.
Does anybody has a PS3 and an Apple TV, and if so do you find one superior to the other for watching videos (and Netflix in particular)? I have a PS3 upstairs already and love it, but I want something for the basement through which I can watch Netflix and I'm curious if Apple TV can do something for me that a PS3 can't.

I have both. I tried doing an apple tv upstairs and a ps3 down but it just wasn't cutting it for me and I ended up buying a second apple tv. There are pros and cons to both. The ps3 will play most formats of videos while the appletv requires the extra step of encoding to an apple friendly format. The ps3 interface is what you get with the cross media bar, while the apple tv is a little more stylish (and it marks what's been watched which is big for tv shows imo).
I prefer apple tv's netflix layout, but beyond that I haven't noticed a difference.
In terms of what the apple tv can do for you that the ps3 can't, it's an airplay device, so if you have an ipod touch, iphone or ipad you can stream content off of it to the tv. You can also send your itunes music to it (great for music at parties or get-togethers). It's also really good for showing off photos you may have on your computer if that's your sort of thing.
You can rent/buy movies or tv shows from it, but you can do that from the ps3 can't you? I haven't checked. Did that feature ever come to canada?
My recommendation is to try it out and see if you like the set-up. For me it drove me insane that ps3 wouldn't mark my shows as watched (i'm talking from my computer, not netflix), and my wife hated using a game controller to control the tv.

Anyone have trouble with their Harmony Remote and Apple TV?
I set it up and when I switch to the Apple TV activity and it does not have control over any device. So then to control the Apple TV I need to manually change it, and to change the volume I need to change to my reciever etc.
All my other activities work without any problems.

I have no issues with the setup. In your Harmony programming what category did you set the Apple TV under? On the computer app.

That extra step could be a deal-breaker for me. I love how hassle-free the PS3 is.

Yes you can...$2/movie cheaper than Shaw, too. I haven't done it yet, though. Just noticed you can last night.

Yeah, my wife bought a PS3 remote because she didn't like the controller. The remote is actually kind of nice to have.
Well thanks a lot for the response. The fact that I'd have to screw around with video formats is a real pain for me, but I do like that Air Play thing and I like how slick Apples interfaces seem to be (my only experience is with iPhones, though). Plus the Apple TV is soooo cheap. Guess I'll have to think about it a bit more...
