Hasn't been a problem for me since the update that supposedly fixed it. A friend of mine still has an issue with it. Although he does have a screen protector which may or may not be causing an issue with it.

Both me and my wife have sensor issues as do a few of my friends. I actually have yet to meet someone who hasn't had a complaint. It is completely impossible for me to cup my phone between my shoulder and not end up pressing something. I was able to do this flawlessly 100% of the time with my 3g and 3gs.

However everyone I know also has a screen protector so you might be onto something there.

I don't have a screen protector and it happens to me whenever I hold the phone to close to my face, like with my shoulder.

Is it wise for me as a 3G owner, to upgrade to the latest software?

I think 4.2 contained further enhancements for the speed on 3G's, so yes (Especially if you are running 4.0 or 4.1)

Yes 4.2 does help the 3G quite a bit. Maps is still unusable though.

It would seem I'm having trouble downloading the update. In iTunes, it says there is new iPhone software, but when I click update, it says iTunes is already up to date. So I'm not sure why it's checking the iTunes software when it should be checking the iPhone software.

Ok, I've about hit the wall with this piece of crap 3G. Is it assumable that we'll be getting a new iPhone in June or July again next year? I am this close to just going to get a 4, but I really don't want to unless I absolutely have to. I'd hate to buy one now, and then a better one comes out in six months.

Probably, but it will be just as hard to get as the iPhone 4 was. (maybe not as bad as the 4, as that was a big push from the 3gs) so realistically might be longer. might not be a major boost though?

You have 3 choices:

1. Keep the 3g

2. Buy an iPhone 4 and be happy with how much faster it is.

3. Buy Apple and shut down the iPhone division. There will always be a better one on the way.

I'm holding out for June/July for the iPhone 5 to upgrade from my 3GS. Hopefully I can sell it for something to ease the financial hit.

Hopefully I'm wrong for your sake, but I think the market for selling the 3GS will be much smaller when the iPhone 5 is released than the market for the 3G was when the iPhone 4 was released. We're already starting to see apps being released that require you to have the iPhone4 for them to work. I can only see this trend continue.

Yeah, I don't think your 3GS will be worth anything. Is anyone going to buy a 3G right now? When the 5 comes out, there will be a pile of 4's up for sale.

Well, it really depends on if its a "5" or a 4G type thing. My guess is it will be a minor improvement...not enough to warrant the change from 4-->5.

who know's at this point...all the rumours focussed on ipad 2

If it is a bump to 4G then there will be even less market for the 3GS as more people will ditch their iPhone 4's. If it's just a minor improvement I know I'll stick with my 4.

I think what he means is if it's still a 4 with a few extra features and they call it a 4G (much like 3g--->3gs) then there won't be much demand, but if it's a whole new concept/design then it will be more popular.

I highly doubt my 3GS will be worth much of anything. I honestly question what they'll add to warrant an upgrade from the 4. Can't think of a whole lot that phone is missing besides a quick antennae fix and some sensor upgrading.
