Essence of Saigon is alright, if you're close to it. If you're downtown, Sunny Vietnamese on 2nd ave is my favorite.

I will also recommend Pho Kim, the Beef Brisket #17A and the Pho Sate #15
Very nice soup, and there is a sub place Banh Mi #1 right near Pho Kim does awesome subs and spring rolls, but are only usually open lunch hours

Try Rice For King, Just South of Heritage, and East of Macleod. Very good, and reasonably priced.

In the NW, I love Pho Thanh in Huntington Plaza (beside the KFC). Super fast, <$7 for a bowl of pho?? Say whaatttt. Their house special is my personal favourite there, but they have really good sate too.

I always really liked Sunny's in Chinatown, but I haven't had it in probably three years since I moved away.
EDIT: 107 2nd Ave SE

Don't know how authentic it is, but Spring Roll Chalet on 6th Ave SW, (between 5th and 6th streets), has always been a favorite of mine.

You've never had Vietnamese food? I thought you were a wee bit sheltered, what with being afraid of Dover, but there are many Viet restaurants all over the City, not just in Forrest Lawn. Speaking of the 'Lawn Coco garden is good, and the joint in Southland Crossing is fine as well.

I don't mind Thahn Long noodle house just of 17th Ave and 11 St SW.
Its a quick walk there for me from work. Picked up lunch there today, but made the mistake of asking my co-worklers if they wanted any thing as well, expecting may 1 or 2 ppl to respond, not the entire freaking office :P

Funny story, I am a bit of a Pho Sate lover myself, however when I was in Vietnam I couldn't eat the stuff just because it would make me so friggin hot. I'd get 1/4 through a bowl and need a shower. Worst humidity I've ever experienced.

Alright, I made the trek up there today and tried Essence of Saigon Garden across from Churchill. It was so busy so I waited for a table. You're right, I wasn't disappointed, but I wasn't necessarily impressed either.
Spring rolls were cold and very tiny. Did not enjoy those at all.
The Beef Sate was pretty good. The broth was nice, rich and flavourful. It didn't have nearly the same complexity as Pho Dau Bo, and was not very spicy at all; I like when my sate makes my nose run.
There was a good amount of beef, probably the perfect amount, and a lot of noodles. Overall I felt the amount of soup I got for $8.50 was a pretty good deal, I just wish the broth was a little more spicy and more complex. Spring rolls being cold and about the size of my ring finger was also a downfall.
One of the better places I've been as of late, but certainly a long way from being the best in the city. I'd have to put it top-10. It's probably about on the same level as Nha Trang in Panorama as far as Beef Sate goes. Added to my list above and bolded. 8/10.

Li's Pho in Deerfoot Meadows is pretty good. I love their beef satay pho, but I especially love their curry beef and chicken soup. They serve it with the standard thai basil, sprouts, and lime wedge. I also like to give it a large scoop of chili paste.

Wow, no mention of Vietnamese Village yet? Probably some of the best Vietnamese in the city. The Pho Sate is awesome.
It's on 7th ave just west of 8th street SW.

I mentioned it in my original post, I go there quite a bit because I work right down the street. It's not bad for some menu items; as far as their Pho Sate goes, however, they leave quite a bit to be desired IMO. I think Pho Viet on 5th Ave has a better Sate.

Oh... my... god. I am never going back for a $7.25 sub at Thi Thi ever again. This place is amazing.

If you like them, try Huong Viet in the strip mall beside el pescatore. Huong is the the owner of both locations. He used to be in the strip mall where the Brava towers are now. He's been our go to viet place for a few years now, everything we've tried we've liked.
EDIT: looks like I was beaten to it already. Still want to pimp Huong's places, great food.
