ridiculous.

I can't think of even one pitcher who was worth their contract after 5 years. When will these GM's learn?

The Yankees don't have to learn. They have a money tree.

I'm not surprised that the Yankees will pay pretty much anything to get Cliff Lee given what he's done to them in the past two post-seasons. It does shed some light on why the Phillies made the moves they did. First they got Lee for cheap at the 09 trade deadline. They than managed to get the price on Halladay down and only had to spend 60 million over 3 years to get him extended. Turn around and more or less replace the prospects lost in the Halladay deal with what they received in the Lee deal.

AL East better stock on leftie relievers.
I will never forget that game from this season where Molina Threw out both Upton (twice) and Crawford attempting to seal second...seldom see that against those guys.

The New York media is pretty torn on signing Lee. Obviously, some are really supporting the move and lobbying hard for it. While others are pointing out that overpaying for a 34 year old pitcher with a recent history of back problems who got rocked in the World Series is not a very smart move at all. Especially considering the recent failure of AJ Burnett (his June was the worst month of any Yankee pitcher in history).

Personally, I think who ever loses out on the Cliff Lee sweepstakes will actually be the winner in the long run.

Sounds like the Phillies are the front runners for Cliff Lee now. They have started shopping Joe Blanton according to various sources on twitter.

The A's will make the Matsui signing official tomorrow.

Cliff Lee's people have told the Yankees they are going elsewhere (to the Phillies). Source said Yankees offered 7 yrs, $150 million.

Wow, I want to be the Phillies 5th starter, give me the major league minimum and only pitch me when it is absolutely necessary that a 5th starter is needed. We will win the World Series!

Sounds like Lee might have turned down somewhere like 50 million from the Yanks to go to Philly.

Oh and,

Ha ha, stupid Yankees!

Now the Jays have to give KC more than they do for Grienke. Yankees will be desparate.

One thing is getting obvious...Lee really is all about going to a team that has a chance to win it all over just money. That is a LOT of dough to leave on the table.

And even though he is still going to get paid a sick amount of money, it is refreshing to see someone sign for that chance to win and to sign somewhere where he feels comfortable rather than signing for the money. I never expected the Yanks to lose out on Lee. Now what do they do? Greinke is good but not great, I wonder if they look at Seattle and try to pry Felix out of there.

I heard on mlbtraderumors.com that the Rangers were actually the highest bidding team with the 7th year option that would have been included. Must be sad being the Marlins/Braves/Nationals - knowing no matter what you do, you have no chance outside of the wild card to make the playoffs. That is a wild starting four, and with the pieces still in place to have a lineup that packs some punch, a very, very dangerous team.

I'd love to see the Yankees overreact to this and do something stupid.

Good news for the Jays though I guess. That Phillies rotation is out of this world.

One thing I keep hearing over and over again that makes me sick, is people making the case that there's no need for a salary cap in baseball because teams like the Rangers can be successful with low payrolls. I don't see any value in this argument, besides the Twins most of these teams are only successful for a short time frame and then lose most of their big names to free agency. The Rangers are winning in spite of the system.

I think the luxury tax in baseball is somewhat of a joke - as a lot of the money that goes from the free spending teams like the Yankees to the low-budget teams (Pirates, Marlins) goes directly into the owners pockets.

It's saddening to see a lot of these teams do in fact have the money to go out and spend the money to build a winning franchise - but unfortunately will never happen due to the bottom line. Owners just making sure that they break even from year to year, and it is hard to not blame them - no successful business owner would enter such a circumstance where they continually are losing money.
