In 250 words or less define Canadian or Albertan culture and how it effects you on a day to day basis.

It's crazy talk. Still, it is an interesting fact to note that the most popular name for baby boys is now Mohammed in London, Oslo, Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam. But that probably just reflects on a lack of creativity among Muslim parents when it comes to picking a name.

Some may say that he is prophetic in his diatribes but others say he misses the point altogether.

My major problem with Condell is he is fast and loose with the facts. He will latch onto a topic and present what he finds that fits his narrative rather than drilling deeper to find the facts. I find that to be dishonest. For example, in this particular instance he repeats a fallacy talked about on RW web sites. The following link is from a 2009 blog entry.

http://theopinionator.typepad.com/my...-of-rapes.html

The reality is much different. Here at the 2009 rape statistics for the world.

http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_rap-crime-rapes

The United States leads the way by a massive margin. Embarrassingly, Canada comes in 3rd. Of European countries the United Kingdom leads the way at #7 on the list. Sweden comes in at #22, with 1/6 the incidents of rape as the UK. For those concerned about per capita statistics, Nationmaster doesn't let you down.

http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cr...pes-per-capita

Iceland leads the way for EU countries at #10 with the UK coming in at #13. Sweden is not listed in the top 65, but doing the math it puts them on par with the UK. So is there an axe to grind here? Nope. Just a wind bag taking at run at a subject he likes to rail on about without looking at the actual facts. Maybe he's still butt hurt about Sweden being rated a better country to live than the UK.

Here's more of his rants.

No offense to your post...but I thought the only crime statistics that were close to legit were car theft/homicide. All the rest who knows if you're actually getting people reporting the crime.

Best part about the car bombing in Stockholm is that the bomber was the only one to die. Some of these guys aren't the sharpest.

You might be careful on who you share this with, as you might also end up celebrating "stone the blasphemer day" with her as well. (green text intended).

Regarding rape statistics, its important to remember in the modern west reporting them is much more likely due to our women's rights and treatment of the fairer sex.

I know here in Iceland women are very strong minded and I can see why Iceland would be listed #10, not because rape is a problem in Iceland but because when they do occur the girls/women are way more likely to report it. In Iceland its such a small nation, being known as a rapist is a seriously tough thing to carry around, so its extra incentive to report these a**hats.

Quote:
DEFINITION: Total recorded rapes. Crime statistics are often better indicators of prevalence of law enforcement and willingness to report crime, than actual prevalence. Per capita figures expressed per 1,000 population.

Sorry, but a three page hahahahahahahahaha would be the only reponse I have for that. What a joke.
OSAMA BIN LADEN literally said - "Why do you think we don't attack Sweden?" in an al-Qaeda address to the western world. This bomber was just a ****ing idiot. There's terrorism and there's the phenomenon of people commiting suicide and trying to go out with a bang. This jackass was just doing the latter.

There are few things more brilliant or hilarious than The Onions satire on the 9/11 hijackers surprised to find themselves in hell - without 72 virgins. Written in the few weeks after the attacks in 2001.

My point, which maybe I didn't express clearly, was that when it comes to immigration in this country there isn't enough emphasis on integration. We pander to people so much because we are afraid of insulting them by suggesting they should adapt to our values when they come here. I am not suggesting they should be made to give up all aspects of their culture when they immigrate here but they should be required to integrate in to our society. Instead we seem to have this view that we must be so tolerant of others that we shouldn't expect them adapt at all when they arrive. This is why you have second generation Canadians that still speak neither English or French.

As far as Canadian Culture is concerned we are supposed to be a country with equal rights. Yet we allow women to be oppressed right on our own soil, the fact that honor killings even happen, being forced into marriage or cover themselves from head to toe and board an airplane without proving who they are. Allowing Sikh's to bypass the law so they don't have to wear a helmet on a motorbike or allow their children to bring a knife to school.

Unless we stand up for our principles we are going to lose them.

Edit: I just wanted to clarify that I am not saying every immigrant falls into this category. However we should be making an effort to ensure all immigrants know what is expected of them.

How you can type your first paragraph and then follow it with the bolded sentence is truly puzzling. Part of equality is allowing people the right to practice their own religious and cultural beliefs without interference, so long as those beliefs don't impinge upon the rights of others.

The rest of that second paragraph is equally ridiculous.

No offense taken. Statistics are only as good as the information collected. A lot of the information in question is impacted by cultural assumptions and failures to report such crimes. You are inaccurate on the car theft/homicide stats though. They are no more or no less accurate than any of the data collected through law enforcement compstat. All are dependent on people reporting the crime and there are all sorts of factors that go into whether a crime is reported or not.

So we should accept the oppression of women because it's covered by religion?

I am not saying they shouldn't be allowed to practice their religious or cultural beliefs. I am saying that we shouldn't let the aspects of those beliefs that oppress people and violate our laws be tolerated by us as a society simply because it falls under the veil of religion.

It doesn't bother you that we give people citizenship without expecting to speak either language or know anything about the country?

As far as my second paragraph being ridiculous you haven't heard of honor killings in this country, or arranged marriage. The story of the women in a full burqa getting on a plane without being asked to prove who she was or the constant stories of Sikh boys wanting to wear Kirpan's at school.

Wouldn't homicides be much more likely to be reported than any other crime? I mean you can't pull the 'I ran into the door' with a dead body. Obviously there are people who simply disappear and nothing is ever reported, but those cases are likely fairly low in number.

The only conclusion I can draw from your post is that your eyes stopped functioning at the sign of a comma, because everything after that was apparently disregarded.

And please, go on about the Kirpan issue. I'll dust off the 40+ pages I wrote last year about the legal and social issues at play. The notion that they're requesting to carry around knives as a weapon is laughable.

Since your first reply was only 3 sentences and contained only one comma I'm going to assume your implying I ignored this.

I thought I had addressed this in my last response but I am assuming you find it reasonable that women of certain cultures are oppressed because they belong to that group. It's hard to say since you don't seem to want to respond with an argument for your point of view.

The Kirpan issue is not important if they are welded shut, I'm not sure how carrying around a knife is acceptable under other circumstances.

Personally I've never met a 2nd or 3rd generation Canadian who didnt speak english. I have a hard time believing there is any out there. 1st generation, I can totally believe it, but for their kids and grandkids to never learn is a bit unbelievable.
