You'd have to qualify that. From the late 70s until the mid to late 90s SNL produced some of the funniest stuff known to man.
Even in recent years when it hasn't been quite as funny they have produced some great stuff (digital shorts!) and some great talents.
Some of the greatest comedic talents of all time in its 36 year history..
Chris Farley, Mike Myers, E. Murphy, Aykroyd, John Belushi, Dana Carvey, Billy Crystal, Chevy Chase, Steve Martin, David Spade, Robert Downey Jr, Jimmy Fallon, Jeneane Garofalo, Gilbert Godfried, Phil Hartman, Jon Lovitz, Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, Norm MacDonald, Dennis Miller, Tracy Morgan, Jay Mohr, Randy Quaid, Colin Quinn, Rob Schneider, Martin Short, Sarah Silverman, Adam Sandler, Harry Shearer, Andy Samburg, Bill Murray, Molly Shannon, Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Kevin Nealon, Al Franken.
Now I know some of those people weren't discovered by SNL or made famous solely because of SNL but Mad TV has about a tenth of the pedigree, talent and history of SNL.

I have the chance to see him this Saturday night within walking distance of my house, at the Hammersmith Apollo, but unfortunately I've got friends in town for one night only on their way back to Calgary. I'd really love to go see Sir Paul though. As I keep telling myself, one of these days...

The sad thing is that thier most talented cast was their biggest disaster and lead to the long lingering death of SNL that we see now.
Randy Quaid, RD Jr, Michael Anthoney Hall, Jon Lovitz, Dennis Miller, Damon Wayans, Nora Dunn and Terry Sweeney.
I remember that they did a skit at the end of the year where they burned the cast members and Lorne Michaels choose to only rescue Lovitz.
SNL was never really funny again.

Paul did do 4 songs which I believe is a record.

one of the first ones I remember is a ridiculously excellent performance by Neil Young circa 1989 where he performed 3 songs
