I don't think it is 'internet culture' that is waging this payback. 13 year olds in their parents basement aren't doing this.
Rather, it is a small group of people who likely had a hand in creating the modern internet infrastructure that are doing it. People who want to see the internet remain 'anonymous'.

An interesting tidbit that relates to Visa and Mastercard shutting down donations to WikiLeaks because it is "illegal" (along with the stuff I mentioned on the other page):
The US lobbied Russia this year on behalf of Visa and MasterCard in an attempt to ensure the payment companies were not "adversely affected" by new legislation
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010...isa-mastercard
And the plot thickens . . .

With the Mastercard.com attack, it seems all SecureCode services have been taken down.

This thickens the plot how exactly? The US, Canada, and every other nation in a position to do so, routinely lobby other countries to consider the impacts on private domestic and international companies when enacting new legislation. There's nothing groundbreaking here, it's barely even newsworthy.

Geoffery Robertson to represent Assange
Quote:
AUSTRALIAN-BORN human rights lawyer Geoffrey Robertson, QC, has cut short his summer holiday in Sydney to represent WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange after he turns himself in to British police.
Mr Robertson and another specialist extradition lawyer from his Doughty Street Chambers are to act for Mr Assange who was expected to surrender to police late yesterday and appear in a magistrate's court to argue for bail. A full hearing of the extradition case must be heard within 28 days.
[ . . . ]
The Age believes that Mr Robertson, whose chambers are one of the few with a specialist in extradition proceedings with Scandinavian nations, has been in contact with Assange about his defence and met federal Attorney-General Robert McClelland about the case.

Interesting look at how to not only stop Wikileak but also to destroy it's data, where ever it might be.

I'll leave it to the tech experts to decide if it's possible as described.

I'm no tech expert but even I see several fatal flaws in that idea...
1: It's a huge invasion of privacy and the fallout of such would be worse then the Cables themselves.
2: It's highly unlikely that any Worm they could create would be able to get such widespread distribution so as to take down every single copy of the files before corrective action could be taken,
3: If even one motivated person (to say nothing of Wikileaks themselves) has the file in any sort of external data storage unit then the whole exercise was for naught.
That whole articule was just a fruitless exercise in desperate wishmongering from a rightwing baby.

Mastercard.com and its Securecard.com service were both taken down via DDoS attacks earlier. Now Visa.com has been taken down. Wow.

The Vice President of Bolivia is also running a WikiLeaks mirror.

I feel as if I'm a news ticker here . . . but this one seems pretty interesting.
Shell's grip on Nigerian state revealed - Shell infiltrated staff into all the main ministries of the Nigerian government
Quote:
The company's top executive in Nigeria told US diplomats that Shell had seconded employees to every relevant department and so knew "everything that was being done in those ministries". She boasted that the Nigerian government had "forgotten" about the extent of Shell's infiltration and were unaware of how much the company knew about its deliberations.
The cache of secret dispatches from Washington's embassies in Africa also revealed that the Anglo-Dutch oil firm swapped intelligence with the US, in one case providing US diplomats with the names of Nigerian politicians it suspected of supporting militant activity, and requesting information from the US on whether the militants had acquired anti-aircraft missiles.
[ . . . ]
Cables from Nigeria show how Ann Pickard, then Shell's vice-president for sub-Saharan Africa, sought to share intelligence with the US government on militant activity and business competition in the contested Niger Delta – and how, with some prescience, she seemed reluctant to open up because of a suspicion the US government was "leaky".
[ . . . ]
The cable concludes with the observation that the oil executive had tended to be guarded in discussion with US officials. "Pickard has repeatedly told us she does not like to talk to USG [US government] officials because the USG is 'leaky'." She may be concerned that ... bad news about Shell's Nigerian operations will leak out."

Reminds me a bit of Deus Ex. They're even exchanging intelligence with world governments. I don't suppose this is normal corporate behaviour?

Or like was mentioned earlier, a foreign government, or the US for that matter could take advantage of them and release some classified documents that are just a bunch of lies.

I've had coworkers that spent time working in Nigeria, they said its absolutely horrible what goes on down there. The locals are treated like slaves and trash, they hate the Americans and Europeans. Funny though, they like Canadians because we actually treat them like people. One guys brother was nearly abducted until they realized he was Canadian. The environment is an absolute mess and the people drinking the water will be lucky to make it to 40.

If Stuxnet could seriously set back Iran's nuclear ambitions, I have no doubt that whatever the article was talking about could easily happen as well.

I am not sure if any numbers have actually been leaked. From my understanding, Anon was looking to start a "rumour war," and the big rumour they wanted to spread was that numbers were leaked.
According to Sarah Palin, however, her credit card info was "cyber-attacked":
Quote:
The website and personal credit card information of former Gov. Sarah Palin were cyber-attacked today by Wikileaks supporters, the 2008 GOP vice presidential candidate tells ABC News in an email.
Hackers in London apparently affiliated with "Operation Payback" – a group of supporters of Julian Assange and Wikileaks – have tried to shut down SarahPac and have disrupted Sarah and Todd Palin's personal credit card accounts.
"No wonder others are keeping silent about Assange's antics," Palin emailed. "This is what happens when you exercise the First Amendment and speak against his sick, un-American espionage efforts."

Really? I thought Anon was only Ion Cannoning sites.
And it appears Twitter has just suspended the Operation Payback account. I wonder if they'll be targeted now?

I am still fairly certain the numbers are fakes -- that's what it seems is going around on Twitter and assorted other places. Part of the Anon "rumour war." Aimed at causing as much trouble for M/C as possible.

Ah, I have no way of knowing if they are fake or not...
Don't see why anon's official twitter would have posted fakes? Since it's ALOT more trouble if they are real to MC
