Blue Jays still interested in Greinke. We don't know yet if Toronto is on the list of teams that Greinke will aprove a trade to though.

Quote:
Greinke, who turned 27 two months ago, could probably be had for former No. 1 picks Kyle Drabek and Travis Snider and some minor leaguers.
Wouldn’t that be a sudden turn of events? A year ago this week the foundation was laid to send Roy Halladay to the Philadelphia Phillies for three prospects, the best of which being Drabek.
And now this week Drabek is the man the Royals want as the Jays try to acquire another ace.

Am I the only one here that is a little baffled as to why the Blue Jays are targeting another ace? I understand that Grienke is a very good pitcher on a very poor team, but the guy has/had mental issues and that is quite a package (Drabek/Snider) for a guy who is a few years removed from quitting on baseball.

I just don't get the need to go out and land another ace, when in two years time, you will have a staff that will be a legitimate rotation to compete with the Yankees/Red Sox. I would rather see the Jays use these pieces to land a big hitting first baseman (Fielder) or a promising third baseman. Does anyone know of upcoming free agent corner infielders? Maybe Anthopolous is looking to build this team to a point where in two years, he makes a splash via free agency?

I don't know, just don't get the Grienke talk right now is all. Just doesn't make sense to trade Doc for these pieces, then parlay them into Grienke.

A very well written piece on the Padres' fan page, worth a look forsure on how the Adrian Gonzalez trade has affected some.

well written, and Gonzo is an amazing player...but if this guy thinks he's already the Padres "greatest player in franchise history" he must be storing some hash beside those ticket stubs in his desk drawer because Gwynn is the friggen man, one of the greatest hitters EVER, not just in padres history.

The Blue Jays are hitting the road in January for a Winter Tour that will make stops in four cities, as the club tries to reach out to fans across Canada.

On Friday, the club announced it will be taking players and personnel to four cities: Scarborough, Ontario; Kitchener, Ontario; Calgary, Alberta; and Vancouver, British Columbia. General manager Alex Anthopoulos and new manager John Farrell will be taking part in the tour, as will left-handers Ricky Romero, Brett Cecil, outfielder Travis Snider and catcher J.P. Arencibia.

The tour will consist of skills clinics, school visits and other community events. It's reminiscent of the old Winter Caravans that were a staple of the franchise in the 1980s and early 1990s, when the club travelled from coast-to-coast.

....

Beeston also mentioned the possibility of games being played in other parts of the country at some point in the future. In the past, the Blue Jays have played games at the end of Spring Training in cities like Vancouver, Ottawa and even a failed attempt in Saint John, New Brunswick, that had to be cancelled because of snow.

Sounds like the Jays are close to sending Marcum to the Brewers for prospects.

Sounds like it is a done deal according to MLBtraderumors.com. Interesting, and can't say I seen that coming neither. Makes me think they are really serious about the Grienke deal, as they are essentially replacing some of the prospects they'd be using to acquire him.

Interested to hear on the prospects coming back.

It better be a pretty damned good return if we're trading Marcum.

You don't have 2 consecutive seasons of sub 4 ERAs in the AL East by Fluke. I'll be extremely pissed if we essentially end up trading Marcum + some of our prospects for Grienke.

I don't see that as worth it at all.

My guess is that the Jays are going to package a couple of prospects together for Greinke.

Lots of speculation that one of the prospects going to the Jays is Brett Lawrie, a real good 2B prospect for the Brewers. I believe he is Canadian as well.

Both are correct, and if this is true, a very nice pick up by Anthopolous.

EDIT - speculation is the Jays will also receive pitching prospect, and Canadian, Nicholas Bucci. Bucci threw in A ball last year in Milwaukee's minor league system.
EDIT EDIT - I didn't realize how poor Marcum was in the A.L. East outside of the Orioles. Numbers were pretty significant against the big three, and sure makes sense now to as why Anthopolous has dealt him.

I personally am not familiar with the prospects coming back, but dealing Marcum is a huge blow IMO. What more can the Jays expect from him? Say the Jays are interested in Greinke. How does a deal of essentially Marcum + a high end prospect for Greinke, make the Jays that much better? I'm irked by this deal myself, and I'm really curious to see what's further happening here.

Sounds like it is just Lawrie for Marcum. Bucci not part of the deal.

Marcum hasn't actually faired all that well against the Yanks, Red Sox and Rays, but pretty much dominates everyone else.

His delivery method (the W) lends itself to many injuries over time. Marcum already missed a full year, and in return we get the Brewers top prospect. Lawrie is 20 and in AA, and his OPS this past year was only .020 less than Snider when he was in AA and 20.

Snider is considered to be a budding superstar based on his production at his age. So just for that fact, this trade is a major win, even if it may mean that the jays are a little less good in the rotation next year.

Also, I don't think the Jays are going to get Greinke unless the asking price is significantly less than what's being reported.

If you run with

Romero
Morrow
Cecil
Drabek
Stewart

as your rotation next year, it will be basically equivalent to what we had last year (slightly worse at the #4 spot, but significantly better at the #5 spot)

Plus it gives guys like Stewart and Drabek who would've been blocked by Marcum a chance to push forward in their careers, so they will be better in 2012, 2013 etc.

Lawrie also gives the Jays some options because he could be converted to 3B, 1B, left at 2B, or LF, which the Jays can use all the good position players they can get their hands on.

And in his first two seasons Snider has shown a fair amount of inconsistency. It's not like this guy is looking to be the next Pujols. He's looking like a guy who may be a 25-30 homerun guy which is an above average corner outfielder. For this Lowrie guy it's said that his future also may be as a corner outfielder.

I don't think I'm too excited to trade a legitimate established pitcher who can throw 195 innings a year for a prospect who doesn't even have Sniders upside. I certainly wouldn't be calling it a major win.

The reason why I'm considering this a major win is because Marcum's pitching style is an injury waiting to happen. It's selling at the peak of his value.

ESPN Insider still has the Jays as the front runner for Greinke. I would be shocked if he landed somewhere other than in Toronto. There is just too many linking the 2 together now.
