They are currently on a "rebirth" tour.. I think the beats on Kanyes album are going to prepare a lot of people for the new wave of Wu. They have been pulling that stuff for decades already.

As someone who listens to urban music about 80% of the time, I'm interested to hear what some of you more well-rounded music fans think of Kanye's album.
For hip hop heads it's an exuberant and daring album, and time will tell if it's the masterpiece lots of people are saying it is. Just wondering if it's as enjoyable a listen for people who don't go out of their way to listen to hip hop records.

This is always a great thread. I'll take a few days and put together my list of my ten best hip hop albums of the year and post it here.
I love good hip hop, and I think that Kanye's production and music is by far some of the best I've heard, but I cannot stand his "rapping" at all. He has no pace, no structure, no discipline. I hear some of his lyrics and he's clearly trying to be like Jay-Z in my mind and he fails so hard.
By far the best hip hop album of the year in my mind though is Shad's Tsol. That album is out of this world.

I have been out of touch with Hip Hop for a while, basically just listening to my older stuff, I really like Drake but I am not an auto tune fan so it is hard to listen to most of his stuff. I hate it when talented rappers water their music down with that, I blame it on The Black Eye Peas..
But this is great, I need to keep my ear to the ground because I can't believe I missed out on this..
Sucks cause I used to be a huge BEP fan..

The Black Keys album is the only one this year that really impressed me. How does the Grammy's come up with there awards selections, must be heavily wieghed on record sales? Katy Perry cant sing or dance and gets an album of the year nod?

Music awards are almost always ridiculous. I get why they exist, to promote popular music rather than the best music so that everyone makes more money. What gets me is the artists that have convinced themselves it's any kind of accomplishment. It's not. When the Foo Fighters get nominated for album of the year and Arcade Fire doesn't or James Blunt instead of Sufjan Stevens, the awards have no meaning. It would be the equivalent of Due Date getting nominated for Best Picture instead of the Social Network.

I boycott watching these things, not because I think there is a valid "popular / commercial music" versus "cool / good music" division that is being flaunted and violated by these shows. In fact, I get bored reading people who say they don't like "popular" music, as if that's some type of valid critique or dog whistle to people with real music taste.
Music is about a personal connection. No referendum of strangers will ever substitute for personal taste.
I don't think many bands in this thread are especially popular. Maybe Arcade Fire and Vampire Weekend.
Hear hear! Even though I love this thread and always find a couple new bands/albums that end up being mainstays on my iPod, I often haven't heard of half the artists mentioned, or find their work quite a challenging/difficult listen for my novice ears.
However, aside from hip hop, when I explore other genres I sometimes like to be pushed out of my comfort zone and expand my horizons, and recommendations like the ones in this thread are a good starting point.
But I know what AC is talking about- for every LP I listen to that is on an ultra-indie-hipster (and I mean that lovingly, not condescendingly, haha) top 10 list that I can get down with, there are 2 or 3 that I just do not feel any attachment/connection to.
Kermitology- Shad's TSOL is a great album, will be on my list for sure. Hadn't seen that video, thx for putting it up.
I really enjoyed This Is Happening, but I think my album of the year goes to Devil's Music by Teddybears. It won't change your outlook on life or anything, but it's full of catchy riffs, and Crystal Meth Christian will get stuck in your head days and days.

Oh yeah, completely forgot about Girl Talk. I didn't think it was possible to get better than Feed the Animals, but he totally surpassed my expectations with All Day.
Mumford and Sons are really good, but I'm starting to find they're getting overplayed, and as such I'm starting to get a little sick of them.
I'll have to look up Tokyo Police Club's new album. I really liked Elephant Shell, but they've fallen off my radar lately.

My favorite Album of 2010 is hands down Gorillaz - Plastic Beach. Took a few listens to get into some of the songs but it's a great album. I went to their show here in Vancouver and they put on an unbelievable performance!

I had no idea that Teddybears released a new album! Soft Machine was so awesome that can't wait to get a hold of this one. It seems to only be on the Swedish iTunes though. . . where did you buy it?
