Official Toronto Blue Jay Thread
We had a official Blue Jay Thread before the site went down, figured I better start another one.
Below is an updated Story on Burnett
http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Baseball/M...17921-sun.html
As for trades I am guessing we should start to see more in the next two weeks or so.

I would expect a few deals in the next week or so but come December 5-8 there should be a bunch of deals because of the winter meetings.

Not really a Blue Jay Story but its interesting that Carlos Delgado has now been traded to the Mets. He lasted only a year with the Marlins the City of his choice.

Wow, I'm really surprised he accepted that trade.
Afterall, the city of New York hates him for his refusing to stand for God Bless America.

Yeah, but Carlos does like Mets GM Omar Minaya. Didn't he sign in Florida because there is no personal income tax in the state. Well enjoy paying taxes now Carlos!

Ha...I think Carlos has the last laugh, though. He has a built in thing in his contract about getting that taxes covered...I think its in the TSN article...I'll see if I can find it.

I am not overly familiar with Overbay but his numbers don't really blow your socks off. Frankly he's not much of an upgrade over Hinske...how is his defense? Relieved to read that they wouldn't give up McGown for him as that would be a bad move.

I agree, the Jays will be sorry if they trade a guy like McGowan. As for Overbay he is okay but I am hoping they can land a guy with more potential.

Overbay is a very decent player, but his defense at 1B is attroicous. He has to DH (with Hillenbrand playing the field instead).

Numbers are there, 53 doubles 2 years ago is a very impressive stat. However, he was extremely hot to begin this season, but fell off (I remember him having a massive +.450 OBP early in the season ~ 40 games in.
I'm not sure what caused that drop off though.

Overbay is alright, but he's not a prototypical slugging first baseman. I think of Mark Grace when I think of Overbay. A guy who can hit 300+, but is more of a 15-20 home run guy who's good for 80-100 RBI and can hit a few doubles. As opposed to the guy who's going to hit 30-40 home runs and drive in 120. I think the Jays need that power threat, but thats just me.

Its being reported in other spots too - appears to be true. Great first step to the off-season. This also opens the possibility of trading Batista for something of value.

Closer - FILLED
Power Hitter

Complete overpayment IMO.
God couldn't we have put that cash somewhere else? I'd rather overpay for Brian Giles vs. Overpaying for BJ Ryan.

The way I see it is at least they went out and got someone. Someone proven too.
Its extra cash, and its getting spent. If we can lock up Burnett for $10 mil per, and then trade for a big bat I would consider it an off season well done.

I don't see how it can be considered overpayment. If you want to play with the big boys on the free agent market you have to buck up the cash. Otherwise you get stuck with Kerry Lightenberg being your big off-season bullpen acquisition.
The market sets the value.

Good signing by the Jays. Improves the pen and keeps another good arm away from the Yanks and BoSux. I have heard that Giles is likely going back to the Padres. Batista maybe moved but I am not sure how much value he has.

ESPN is reporting that Ryan is NOT signed and reports Blue Jay GM Riccardi as the source, and he is denying it outright.

I've been reading a few articles, and they all quote Ricciardi as saying nothing is official. Not too surprised though.
Kind of like when Calgary signed Hamrlik, I think Sutter denied it until all the T's were crossed and I's were dotted.
