Canadian killed in Afghanistan
http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/natio...ath051124.html
Holy crap I'm worried right now. One of my best friends is currently in Afghanistan, from the unit named in the story, and he's a LAV-III driver. God I hope it's not him.

I just found out it wasn't my friend, but it was a member of his unit and someone he knew quite well. I was forwarded an email from my friend's mother that he wrote to her, letting her know that he was ok before she heard about it in the news and started worrying.
I'm glad it's not my buddy, but it's still really sad we lost another one of our soldiers over there.

I wonder if this was one of those new G-Unit cars, or if it was one of those crappy ass jeep looking things that a bunch got killed in by a suicide bomber.
Below is the G Unit,
Trying to find the other one.

It was neither. It was a LAV-III, an armoured Infantry Fighting Vehicle.

It's not hard to imagine if you're the guy with his head sticking out the top when it rolls . . . . or maybe you're inside and hit by something metallic and heavy flying around.
Sorry to hear this . . . .

Armoured fighting vehicles are good for protecting you from small rounds and explosions and artillary, but they just don't have any safety systems in place to protect the people on the inside.
The last thing that you want is to be buckled in when your under attack, you want to be able to get up and out as quickly as possible.
Sad thing to have happen

My thoughts and condolences to the family, his friends, and co-workers. I am deeply grateful for all they are doing over there in the name of freedom.

Here's part of an email from my friend explaining more about what happened:
Quote:
Woodfield, the guy who was killed was the gunner. The crew commander sustained pelvic injuries but will be fine, he was thrown from the vehicle when it flipped on its side before it rolled. The two guys in the back were also flung from the back hatches before the roll over, they are both stable. The driver, again I know him quite well suffered a cracked skull. He was flown up to Bagram for x rays, he is still in serious but stable condition. Woodfield was crushed when the LAV rolled over, from what I can gather he was barely alive when they airlifted him out. There were two LAV's on patrol on highway 1, like we do everyday. One went to pull out of a slow moving vehicle and the other followed suite, the oncoming traffic never moves. They are suicidal over here, if you don't move you will have a head on collision, this forced the first LAV to pull back in quickly, again something we do everyday, and the vehicle started to fish tail. The LAVs are up armoured and weigh 18 ton, they are top heavy. Does not take a lot to roll them.
