I'm not intending to be a dinkus.

But there is absolutely no way that you can establish a causative link between automatic or manual transmission usage and accident rates. If you could, it would, ultimately, be reflected in insurance rates, either to make cover the increased cost of insuring automatic tranny drivers, or to encourage people to drive lower-risk manuals, thus reducing their actuarial risk.

At first I wasn't really in favor of the new distracted driver law, but now it can't get here fast enough. Twice today, in the hour or so I spent driving, some woman on her phone stopped and was yielding in a merge lane. First one was 17th ave. merging onto Sarcee Tr. after seeing the person was stopped, I honked and she merged in, no big deal. The 2nd one was ridiculous. Merging from Richmond rd onto Sarcee Trail, some lady was sitting there yapping away on her cell phone, where she has her own lane to build up speed and eventually merge in. So I honk twice, she does nothing, I honk again, and she throws her hands up in the air, turns around, and gives me the finger. So I shoot her a "what the fata are you doing" look, and there is no more traffic coming down Sarcee so she continues, I admit I'm in the wrong here, she was driving 40 so I pass her in the left lane while giving her the finger, she then feels the need to honk on her horn ~10 times while flooring it in her Infiniti G35, so I look over and she giving me the finger. If you were paying attention you stupid bitch this would've never happened.

I gotta split the difference with the pylon / 4x4 issue.

I spent one track day at Race City on my bike. This makes me a professional. Ok, it doesn't. But I did learn one important lesson: After 30 years of motorcycling, I didn't have a freakin' clue how to operate one at speed. I thought I did... I had gone plenty fast down some pretty twisty roads, but in reality, when a professional showed me how to do it, I had a lot to learn about doing it in a way that was controlled and safe. Real, technical riding skills.

The thing about driving is that those technical skills are only part of it, and let's be honest: most modern vehicles are designed so that someone who can operate a blender can drive one... ABS is a good example, we used to rely on driving skill to stop a vehicle quickly. The other part is simple awareness, which is much different on a track than on the road. A track is a controlled environment, there's no intersections, no opposing traffic, no pedestrians, hell there isn't even anything to run into (although Race City used to be known for it's poor design that way). Obviously a racer has to be aware of what's around them, but it's a completely different and less random environment than the streets.

I'm glad I spent a day on the track, the instructor taught me some technical skills that have helped me get out of a few jams on the road - even at normal city and highway speeds. But at the same time, oblivious driver is oblivious, and all the skills in the world won't help that.

I just got a bike and i definately think riding one makes you more aware of what is going around you. I actually agree with both 4x4 and pylon here. Lots of bad drivers but i realize there are a lot if bad drivers out there and you have to know they are on the road because you are so much more vulnerable than everyone elsewhere. I'm always scanning seeing what people are doing and try and avoid all the bad drivers so i don't get a lot of close calls, but i would definately be in more of them if i wasn't always scanning.

What's with people in cars revving and mouthing crap at you when you're crossing an entry way to a parking lot and they have to stop and wait for you to cross?

Had some dude's ugly girlfriend (possibly sister) flip me off the other day for apparently not walking fast enough as they finally pealed by me the second they had enough room.

Not the first time. I'm at the point if I seem like I piss you off, I'm literally gonna walk painfully slow, possibly tie my shoe.

I've had an idea for a few years now that would fix this. Build a 10 foot tall barrier on top of the median. I'm sure it would cost 10's of millions to build, but, I also think it would pay for it's self in recovered time.

Personally I can't wait till car's drive themselves by interfacing with a municipal transit grid.

If I have a choice of using the train or diving, I use the train. Less stress and usually takes the same amount of time. Busses on the other hand are lame.

Do you really feel that much stress when driving? It is just part of the city life. Dealing with thousands of other cars in a day. Typically each day is fine. Only the occasional 'incident' but then if a person pays attention and drives defensively then it is fine.

I also find driving stressful and will generally avoid it.
