Default Random Though - Similarity between the Harry Potter Universe and X-men Universe

I searched for a Harry Potter thread but I didn't find anything

Anyways, I just saw the latest Harry Potter movie last night (my financee is a big fan). Not that I have ever read the books, but it dawned on my last night that the story is similar to the X-men universe

- The bad guys in Harry Potter believe that the magically gifted are superior to muggles and seek to rule them all, in the X-men, the bad guy movement not only want to stop the persecution of mutants, but that they are superior to them and represent the next wave of human revolution
- 2 leaders that had a relationship at first, drift off to become enemies. Dumbledore vs Vortemort (Teacher-student), Professor X vs Magneto (friends in the beginning)
- A chosen one, Harry Potter vs Wolverine (in the movie version only)
- Both have special schools where young people are trained to harness their powers, Hogwarts vs School for the gifted
- Powers on a genetic level - magic blood vs genetic mutation

Anyways, this is mainly a random thought I wanted to share. Feel free to let die

I agree there are some similarities but I think you're overstating similarities:

Magneto/Xavier was more a friendship of equals. Dumbledore/Voldemort was teacher/student, and I personally don't thinl you would really call it a friendship. Dumbledore was always very cautious with Tom Riddle, you could see it in their very first meeting where Dumbledore warns Riddle that certain behaviours will not be tolerated at Hogwarts.

With respect to the chosen one, I think it's a big stretch to assign that role to Wolverine in the X-Men. If anything I might have applied that to Jean Grey. Wolverine is kind of like the anti-hero secondary nucleus of the team, occasionally stepping up to take direct charge but usually just a very important team member.

The parallels are interesting nonetheless.

Even the original X-Men storylines between mutants and humans were a allegory of the race struggle/civil rights movement.

Entertainment and novels tend to mirror life in one aspect or another so you're going to get similarities in concepts between everything.

Weren't there actual openly gay heroes in the X-Men? I recall NorthStar from Alpha-Flight was gay... Harry Potter has not gay characters IIRC.

As for the actual characters being slightly messed up in HP... I agree since the original books were geared much more towards a younger audience.

^^^ JK Rowling revealed Dumbledore to be gay, although he shows no gayness in the books other than never being with a women.

The biggest difference is that it's legal to think about hammering Storm. But for most of the movies thinking about hammering Hermoine would send you to prison.

So that explains why Dumbledore took such a big interest in Harry

Bah, you pretty much just described a whole lot of epic movies.

Take Star wars for example

-The Sith think they're superior and want to rule the galaxy
-Take your pick on leaders and past relationships, Darth Vader/Obi-Wan, Darth Vader/Luke
-A chosen one, again take your pick, Anakin/Luke
-There was a Jedi Academy
-Stupid midiclorians....but genetic none the less

There's no way this thread will have any street cred without Sheldon, Raj, Leonard, Howard and yes, Penny chipping in their thoughts.
