And even better is when you get snow falling with strong winds. McIvor can have drifts 2-3 feet deep in places. Last December was just nuts with that storm on the 4th/5th.

Yup, McIvor is all about crazy road conditions..... I was stuck in that mess last year. I have pics somewhere.

I was just up in Edmonton, and the highway was really well maintained. A little skiff of snow and it got pretty sketchy at points though. Nothing that slowing down a bit couldn't get you through. Not the buildup of ice like we have in the city.
The city of Edmonton itself, however, was a little easier to get around. I have come to the conclusion that they must not have had the rain/sleet that froze overnight last Monday or whenever it was. In Calgary we seem to have a nice base layer of ice underneath everything, and up there it was more like the standard winter road.
Hopefully we'll get some relief later this week.

Is the south pole in general (year round average) colder than the north pole?

Haha, I've given up on this weather and finally decided to pursue my next degree in the States, and yes, the weather was a big factor that played into my decision. I'm not going to lie on that (cold) front.

They didnt, they got cold before they got the snow. The one thing I did notice is they use alot more sand up there, alot of the roads are dark brown from the sand rather than just the sprinkling they use down here.

Driving conditions are pretty good in Edmonton. No icy roads, and city doing good job plowing snow off roads. But holy hell is it cold.

My residential street was plowed today...first time ever!
With that said i'm not sure 8 days after the snow started, and 2 days before it warms up is really beneficial...
