Now Free: Locate and Remote Wipe for iPhone
Didn't want this lost in the shuffle of the iPhone 4 thread. I know quite a few people here have had iPhones stolen or lost, or just wished for this feature in case of either happening.
This was previously part of MobileMe, but now it's just a standard feature. If you lose your phone, you can track its location over the internet from Apple's website. You can display a message on the phone (offering a reward, for example), and you can remotely lock the phone with a password. As a last resort, you can remotely wipe all of your data off the phone.

I've been using this service as part of MobileMe for over a year now. I've already recovered my phone once with it, and figured out were I left my phone a few times.

Just to clarify- this only works on iPhone 4's; right?
Or will it work on a 3GS running O/S 4.2?

It works on 3GS, but it will only be free for newest generation devices, so iPhone 4, iPad, and iPod touch 4G.
Otherwise you need a mobileme subscription (Some say it isn't worth it but I really like it)

I still have a MobileMe subscription from the Apple Store in the shrink wrap from 2 weeks ago -- think they'll take it back?

This feature has saved me hundreds of dollars already. Highly highly recommended. For those without a newer iOS device, there are cheap apps that replicate the functionality to a degree.

It's absolutely infuriating the way Apple releases their software. And by releases, I mean iTunes just told me my device was up to date.

With almost 300 million iOS devices out there, you have to understand the need to trickle software releases slowly throughout the day
I do get that it's a pain in the ass though.

So, I was able to get the free find my iphone service running on both mine and my wife's 3G. The key is that you need to have at least one current generation device to activate it, so in my case i have an iPad so I just signed up and activated my account and was then able to add my phones. I guess the key is to find a friend with an iphone 4 and setup your account on their phone to activate it and then just remove your account settings from their phone and then you should be able to add the service to your older model iPhones...
EDIT: Oops, I guess this is already covered in the other thread, NM

Well, this thread was created specifically for the Find Your Phone feature, some people might not see the other one.
You can do what you suggested above, but I have been hearing that each device can only be used to create a maximum of 3 mobile me accounts. Even removing the account off of the phone does not reset the count. If the count cannot be reset by any means (restore, jailbreak etc) It could affect the resale value of the device.

Hey, so this happened. Now after setting up my MobileMe thing, I keep getting a message saying "Cannot access email@email.com". Thing is, my emails are still coming in fine. What gives?
