Default Cat 5 Install

I want to install Cat5 RJ45 from my office on the main floor to the basement as well to the living room.

Any recommendations on where best place to source this would be? Pricing? I don't think I would be using more than 100' of cable with only two or three face plates.

http://www.monoprice.com

Shipping costs kind of suck but I did the same thing recently, as well bought a few other things. Even with the shipping costs it was still cheaper than I could get all the cable I bought up here.

Kind of splitting hairs, but Cat5 is now obsolete and is getting hard to find. It will work great for a house if you can get it though.

Check Kijiji or put a post in the buy/sell thread as tons of people sell of their scrap after a job. Just don't get it from a retail place like Home Depot as they charge way too much for it.

Buy bulk from Monoprice. 1000 feet for less than $100 + shipping. The other parts are dirt cheap, a buck a faceplate. If you are only using face plates then you don't need cables or crimpers. Can probably find someone who is willing to split the cost of the cable so they can do their own place, or just sell the excess on Kijijiji afterwards. If you are not comfortable crimping your own cables, or putting in the faceplates, you could probably work out a deal to trade excess material with someone who is able to do it.

Might as well get Cat 5e or 6 in case you ever want to go over 100Mb/s. Make sure it is in-wall rated.

Cat 5e
Cat 6

Crimpers

RJ45 connectors

Single Faceplates

Double Faceplates
