Thats why I've never felt bad about puking in the back of a cab, he can afford a man servant to clean up my mess.

I was always under the impression that the counter keeps track of all the fares taken in. So that's not the case?
If you're a cab driver and you claim $26K per year, IMO you're just asking for a CRA audit.

I wont be tipping cab drivers in Calgary from now on, not that I ever tipped them that much to begin with.

Sounds like BS; Just a guy talking himself up. The meters they run are connected to their head offices and monitored.
How could he get 80% of his pay under the table and not be taxed on it?

There is a lot worse going on in the tax evasion department than what taxi drivers are screwing "us" out of.

Yeah, I'm not buying it.
My guess is that a taxi driver who owns his own taxi license plate in Calgary makes a pretty decent living. But all of those together would probably fit into a phone booth.
Also, maybe the money is decent; but frankly, it still doesn't sound like enough to put up with the hours, the constant sitting, and dealing with drunk idiots puking in your car.

On behalf of drunk idiots everywhere I stand by my right to vomit in taxi cabs.

A cabbie not claiming their tips is no different than a server or anyone else.

The guy sounds like a fool. He is not only hurting other cab drivers, but his own fellow immigrants.
My bet is Revenue Canada will eventually catch up with this guy.

A good friend of mine has been a cab driver in the city of Red Deer for about 4 years. He rents his cab for $400 each week, and occasionally works a 6 day week. He tells me that he is able to pay for the cab rental in a day and a half. I never got into how much he clears, but it was enough for a bachelor to live very comfortably. He constantly goes on trips, to hockey games, concerts, etc.
I think they do better than some would think, but I don't believe it is quite as lucrative as the OP was told.

The OP misunderstood - the cabbie was including his income from peddling teenage prostitutes...

I think they do alright. It's a profession that you can support a family on with no education.
But as someone mentioned, you work 6-7 days a week, from 4pm to 4am and deal largely with drunk idiots. Not exactly a glamour job.

Not sure about how Calgary works, but in Vegas, the cabbies were pushing hard for the Chinese Massage Parlors with the "happy endings". I wonder how much of a cut they get?

If it was so lucrative, more people would be driving cabs. They're not.
I do not doubt for a second that lots of that cash they earn is pocketed, taken tax-free.
Also, I hate cabbies that talk your ear off. I know it's always important to have a good conversation and be cordial, but the ones that brag about themselves and want you to hear the problems and situations in their life is just brutally annoying. I don't care about your problems, so please spare me the drama... you don't even know me, and you won't ever again when I get out of this car.

There are limits on the number of cabs in a certain area, city. Calgary is maxed out if I understand correctly.
