In Edmonton this weekend, Deerfoot is fine til it turns into hwy2 then its icey patches till about the grain elevator then its fine up until Red Deer then its ok but not great, after Red Deer its 130 all the way to Edmonton with no cops in sight. Roads are bone dry north of lacombe.

McIvor at 52nd is a skating rink. I've seen one accident and several near-misses in the past two days with people trying to slow down to turn north onto 52nd. People are taking to driving on the grass/sidewalk to get enough traction to stop. I think a sander went by tonight, so hopefully it's not as bad tomorrow.

I had some road rage today which caused me to swear and curse at a lady.
I am in the right hand lane. The car at the front of the left lane had the turn single to turn. But they were spinning out on the ice. Basically not going anywhere. The lady behind him was laying on the horn. Stupid ..itch.

to me that horn signifies "Don't be a jackass, and get winter tires and/or quit flooring the throttle for no reason". the lady was right

I like when I am driving and the accident is on the OTHER side of the road, and the guy in front of me (we're doing 50) just slams the brakes and virtually stops to rubberneck to see what is going on. The road is essentially ice so I can't brake and I come about an inch away from rear ending him.
NOT
ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME??!?! On a road as slippery as hockey rink you're going to just suddenly brake to rubberneck. This is how accidents are caused you brainless son of a monkey turd.

I'm heading up there today, so your first-hand report is timely and helpful. Although it sounds pretty funny to refer to "the grain elevator" like some back road in Saskatchewan, but I know exactly what you're talking about - the big one near Carstairs.

I had a close call on that exact spot yesterday in my 10-ton work truck! I approached it extremely slow but when I needed to come to a complete stop, the truck kept moving and my a$$ end started shifting left! Traffic was passing by but luckily I stopped inches from entering 52nd. I was even wailing the air horn to warn the coming traffic.
Experiences like this help my patience when I see someone going a little slower than I see necessary. You can never be too careful in these conditions. Having said that, if you're not comfortable going a reasonable speed on Deerfoot, you should prob take an alternate route until conditions improve.

The person was not flooring the throttle. They were giving it some gas and the tires were spinning on the ice. They would back up a bit an then try again. Back up a bit and try to get some traction. They were doing it the proper way. This spot was on a slight up hill and pure ice. Even snow tires would spin.
But you are right. That person should have snow tires.
But you and the honking lady should stop being such pricks. Unless you are kidding... then I am too.

Oh whoops i forgot about my post in this thread. Sorry i wasn't clear. I didn't mean an 'actual' merge lane, I meant if it was a lane that normally went through but was closed due to construction or an accident.

Maybe, but going 20-30km/h under the limit on 14th Street in the SW is a little extreme. There are some places like the aforementioned 52nd street, but there is little to no issues on 14th and people drive it like we just had another 20cm of snow. Very frustrating.

Heh, 40 in a 50 seems a little different that doing an outright illegal U at a ridonkulous intersection. Might just be me though.

I was out running some errands the past couple of hours and it seems like the roads are worse than they were yesterday. How is that even possible?

Less sanding/plowing as it's not a weekday commute situation? That and weekend drivers/normally stay at home parents out and about perhaps?

I saw a Dodge SX 2.0 struggling to drive up Shaganappi Trail N yesterday and the roads were pretty clear. Imagine if it was icy...

Cold makes air contract, so tires have less pressure. My tires have TPMS and my car beeps at me if the tires are low. My son hates the beep and tells me to put air in the tires when the car beeps. It's cold out so I don't want to put air in the tires. When it warms up the tires don't beep and my son doesn't complain so I don't put air in the tires.
Life is funny.

Canada is stupid because it's a northern hemisphere country, and it just happens to be snowing in the northern most major city in November. it's just a bit of snow and cold weather, man up or move south

I experienced this spot first hand on the 19th as well. Going fairly slow, road decent, then skating rink. I was working like heck trying to slow down, but nuthin. I turned into a curling rock, just slowly rotating right no matter what I did. Barely missed the yield sign as I drifted into 52nd, fortunately nobody coming. Went by the next morning and 2 trees and the yield sign had been knocked down.
I suppose if we see a bad spot like that 311 is the best bet to get some action from city crews?

After a few days of winter driving this year once again I am faced with the age old debate....who do I hate more? Is it the dbags that insist on tailgating cars they deem to be "going too slow" in the right hand lane of a two (or more) lane road? or is it the equally offensive dbags that insist on driving 20-30 km under the speed limit, in the left hand lane of a two (or more) lane road?
Tough, tough choice.
