Did you guys know the original name for Pacman was Puckman? You'd think it was because he looks like a hockey puck but it actually comes from the Japanese phrase 'Paku-Paku,' which means to flap one's mouth open and closed. They changed it because they thought Puckman would be too easy to vandalize, you know, like people could just scratch off the P and turn it into an F or whatever.

I remember wasting hours on some stupid games for the Odyssey2. The one that sticks out in my memory was apparently called Monkeyshines!

I NEVER figured out what was going on.

In a lot of ways that fighter was just a little too tough, heavily armed and maneuverable.

I could take down a star destroyer with one of those.

Yeah, but really, a one man snub fighter took down the freaking Death Star. The Empire had some serious shoddy workman ship on their hands.

For all the gruff Family Guy receives lately, their Star Wars spoofs have been brilliant.

I don't think the Empire could ever create a defense against a pilot that could hit a whomprat back home in his T-16, especially considering that they were no more then 2 meters across.

Basically the emperor could be taking a dump and Luke could put a proton torpedo through the drainage pipe and right up his butt.

The ship was amazing. I always felt as though getting to play with that ship was a reward after getting through all the insanly tough bomber and fighter levels where 3 hits would take you out.

I logged so many hours into x-wing and t-fighter I can still remember the feeling of taking out 2-3 bombs in a squad and then having to pull up to dodge a torpedo.

Going back to Wing Commander three, the last mission was dropping the Temblor bomb on Kilrah, and the flight to get there was long and tough and you had to beat Thrakath and Hobbes before you could do the first death star type bombing run.

So I got to the last phase and saw a Kilrathi cruiser and in typical agressive fashion decided to kill it, so without looking down I hit the missile select button so I could throw a heat seaker at it. I passed over, got lock, it seemed to take a while, and fired the missile and watched in horror as my ultimate weapon blew up the cruiser thus dooming humanity.

HAHA! That's awesome, I didn't know you could lock the bomb onto anything but the planet. I still remember that planetary run. If only these games could get updated. Part of me still wants to hunt down the DVD version of WCIV so I don't have the crappy interlaced FMVs.

Did you ever play Wing Commander Armada against friends?

There was a bug in three, you could volley fire all of your missiles at once. But when you did that it would also fire the Temblor.

I actually have the dos based DVD version of WC IV if you want it, you'd just need to grab the windows patch off of WCNEWS.COM to run it in windows.

I did play Armada against friends. It was great for its time, the flight engines for those games was far ahead of its time.

There was nothing better then doing a head on run, hitting autoslide, and flying past your enemy while pivoting your nose and blowing them to hell.

Armada was the best tying up my phone lines for hours playing that game against friends on my modem. Though back then I used a keyboard only for flight and we would just spend half the time shooting above and below each other cuz our aim sucked.

Speak for yourself, I was having a blast with my Microsoft Sidewinder joystick firing my leech missiles from my Wraith at you.

One day, I decided to login to the Origin Systems BBS because I discovered you could download addons for Wing Commander Armada from their BBS (days before internet). Unfortunately they were in Houston or something and at that age, I didn't realize that dialing in with my 28.8K modem would incur horrendous long distance charges. My parents weren't very happy with that. I actually downloaded a ton of huge .wav files to replace my in game taunts with clips from TV shows, etc. foolishly not realizing that I would be the only one to hear them and not the people on the other computers which defeated the purpose.

Damn, I forgot to buy that Copy of LSL: Love for Sail from that guy who had it in the Buy and Sell.

Remember the cover to LSL 1? (aka Soft Porn adventure?). It's unintentionally hilarious. The people in it are people that worked on the game. I believe that's Roberta Williams (as in Ken and Roberta Williams of King's Quest).

Haha, imagine walking up to the till with that in hand.

Edit: According to Wikipedia, the waiter was just some dude from a local restaurant. The rest were affiliated with Sierra:

Quote:
The game's cover features three nude beauties and a waiter in a hot tub. The hot tub is actually that of Sierra's owners, Ken and Roberta Williams. From left to right, the first woman was a shipping clerk at On-Line Systems. The second is the wife of Bob Davis, the creator of another Sierra title, Ulysses and the Golden Fleece. The waiter was an actual waiter from a local restaurant. The woman on the far right was Roberta Williams.[1]

Leech missiles were the best missiles in Armada simply from the humiliation factor of leeching your enemy til his ship failed, then knowing that he was hopelessly watching as you slowly looped around and lined up his cockpit for the kill shot.
