Having my dog on my lap while driving never effected me. She wasn't a rottweiler or anything, just a small 20lb dog, but when she was laying down on me it never effected what I was doing, and if she started moving around I took her off me. Unless the dog is a huge mofo I don't see the problem as long as they got their hands on the wheel.

Fluffy won't be so cute when she gets launched by the airbag.

I'm not a fan of the direction things like this are headed.
I blame the crack down on drinking and driving. That's where all these hairbrained ideas started! That's where this direction first started heading this way!

I'm so glad they passed this bylaw. Texting while driving is worse than drunk driving. Your eyes are on your phone - not the road.

Careless driving is only 6 demerits because it resulted in an accident and you were at fault. Being caught on the phone or txting is not as severe as having caused an accident due to lack of focus.

This government just keeps showing how they are anything but a conservative goverment. They are more like a NDP government. Lets make sure we tell everyone exactly how to live their life.

I used to be guilty of txting while driving but l realise now it's not worth the risk. I have a bluetooth handless system in my car and it works wonders. IMO driver's who txt are just as bad as drunk drivers. They swerve just as much and have their eyes on their lap. I really really hope that the cops crack down on this. Can't wait to see the threads on CP in the future of people who have gotten busted and are complaining about it.

For every action, there is an equal an opposite reaction...

Not only did the researchers find that crashes did not decrease after texting bans, they found that in three states, crashes actually increased slightly.
This wouldn't surprise me, sadly... Instead of texting with the cell phone above the steering wheel, keeping their eyes up and peripheral vision at least able to see things, people would be keeping their phone low to avoid it being seen, resulting in their head being down and totally blocking their whole view.

You'd hope that people would get the message and just stop... but instead they would look to hide it, with disastrous consequences.

Got to disagree on this one....the unpredictability of any dog is still a risk in my book...

have you ever had to make an emergency maneouver while fuffy was on your lap? Personally, I could never understand why someone would want a dog on their lap while they are driving - i mean i love my wife and kids, but would not want them on my lap while piloting down deerfoot..

i am not sure why some would feel this is a cash cow for the government - if you don't want eddie to get your after-tax monies, then put yer phone down while driving......

Agreed, tough hitting the brake when there's a 20lb dog blocking it.

The lap is no place for a dog.

So you'd rather have it legal then? Keep all the distracted jackasses texting or yacking away as they run over highway workers, cyclists, pedestrains. Hey, it's a risk you gotta take, all in the name of convenience!!

I love the small ones that sit in the back windows of cars. I bet they have lots of fun when a quick braking manoeuvere is required.

That is already a law - my wife got pulled over for this one. For everyone's safety (including dog) it is better to put dog in kennel in the back
