Slimy Turkey - is there a doctor in the house?
Yesterday, I opened a sealed bag of Turkey deli meat that wasn't to expire until December 13th.
I noticed it was somewhat slimy. It had a wierd clear glycogen like mucus all over it. It wasn't off color and it didn't have any abnormal smell.
I stupidly ate it. Did I just food-poison myself or something? I've been reading up on common poulty food spoiling and can't find any reference to a clear sliminess related to such things like Salmonella, etc.
I'm worried I'm in the incubation stage of something and I'm going to be very sick or something when I wake up tomorrow. I felt a little nauseous this morning but I seem to be fine now. My lips are really dry for some reason though. Dehydration symptoms? Or am I just being paranoid?

Sounds like it might have been cooled fat/gelatin? That or you are about to go on the ride of your life. Better get those handles installed.
Maybe botulism? That would be pretty bad though. I dont think that takes a day to get a grip over ya.

Well Hack,
Here is a little info I found!
An estimated 2,493 cases of listeriosis, with 499 deaths, occur each year in the United States as a result of eating food contaminated with L monocytogenes, according to the USDA. The disease is most dangerous for fetuses, newborns, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. Last summer and fall, a listeriosis outbreak linked to turkey deli meat sickened at least 52 people, killed 7, and caused 3 miscarriages.

Nothin on the slime though.....

It's probably just some leftover gelatin from the pressing process where the meat is formed into a deli friendly cylindrical object. Happens all the time.

As somebody who has had food poisoning before, I understand that line completely. Food poisoning often takes over a day to take effect; last time for me was about 30 hours after eating the spoiled turkey.
What will this ride be like, you may ask? I'm going to put that in white font below, as there may be people eating at their desks when reading.
Your system will try and expell anything in your digestive tract as rapidly as possible. This means from both ends, at the same time, as rapidly as your body can push it. Unlike being sick with the flu where there is some voluntary control, with food poisoning there is none whatsoever. To prepare have the toilet in the "sitting down position" ready to go. Have an ice cream pail nearby so that as you sit an expel down, the stuff coming up has somewhere to go.
Also have lots of water handy, as this type of being sick will make you very dehydrated.
Odds are it's nothing. But it's better to spend 5 minutes preparing just in case.

Do you need to lose some weight? Food poisoning is one of the greatest weight loss programs ever invented, if you survive it.
I agree its probably just leftover gelatin. You'll be fine. Of course, if we never hear from you again we can probably guess what happened.

Well, it sliced turkey meat in those ready-to-each sealed packages. Isn't gelatin usually just for those round meat products? My mouth is feely really dry right now. (maybe I'll keep the packaging and sue)
Anyway, yeah, I don't come back well. Goodbye Cruel World!

Man. I hope you don't have food poisoning. I had that for Turkey a few years back and I have NEVER been anywhere near as sick as I was during that. Awful times.

Actually, I would say diptheria is much more effective. On a trip to Mexico a few years ago I lost about 10lbs in a week, and could literally eat a marble, wait 10 minutes, then hear it clink into the toilet. Great ab workout as well.

I say your fine ... doesn't all packaged meat have some clear slime on it?
Relax, have some oysters, take in a surf'n'turf, then keep going!

According to this it's a sign that the meat was spoiling:

That said, as a fellow bachelor, I've done the same before and lived to post today. If you don't cramp up tonight, you ought to be fine.
