Most of the reports out there today now have the Jays the front runners for Dan Uggla, if the Marlins choose to trade him. By the sounds of it, he will be a very costly pick up.

Fits in with the line-up can't hit worth a crap but when he does it is often a HR.

Except he has gotten on base at a .361 clip the past 3 seasons. Something no one on the roster besides Overbay has even come close to.
I'm not crazy about trading for Uggla but it's pretty hard to deny that he's a stud at the plate and would give the Jays the "luxury" of at least knowing what to expect from one of their batters year in, year out.

true but considering the price he'll cost to get and then the price if we resign him is it really worth it to have essentially a version of bautista-lite from last year? keep in mind he's asking for a lot which is why florida wants/needs to trade him

Not a big deal. He was a candidate to possibly be a bullpen arm, but guys like him are a dime a dozen.

Yeah, the Jays should stockpile guys who hit .300, but can't take a walk or hit anything more than a single.
Uggla is a 2nd baseman with a .837 career OPS (and two years of .870+ OPS in the past three seasons). Middle infielders that can hit like that aren't easy to find.

Makes sense, the Jays will have to wait until next week because the White Sox are not going to offer arbitration, and if the Jays sign him now, the Sox will say they were, and we lose our 1st and the sox get a sandwich pick as compensation.
That pretty much locks up the DH position.
If the Jays can swing the deal for Uggla, and perhaps sign a 1st baseman (or trade Lind in a package for one) then they should be good.
Also, it wouldn't surprise me if either Olivo or Buck are retained as well if they plan on trading Arencibia.

I think Manny is a decent short-term signing if he's okay with being the DH and never playing an inning in the field. Considering the production we got from the DH position last year anything is an improvement. Last year was a bad year for Manny, but his .870 OPS still would've been 2nd on the Jays.
If it does happen, are the Jays planning on going with Lind at 1st or are they going to use him as trade bait?

I could see both Hill and Lind being used as trade bait if they do get Uggla from the Marlins.
I could see a trade like Arencibia + Rzep + a prospect pitcher for Uggla. If they did that, they could float the idea of trading both Hill and Lind for either a CF or a 3rd baseman and moving Bautista to 3B if we get a good CF like Colby Rasmus from the Cards.
All that would needed to be done at that point is sign either of Buck or Olivo, and find a first baseman (say Carlos Pena)
The jays payroll is only about 60 million with Bautista signing for 10 million, so they definitely have the ability to add 30 mil no problem (what they actually spent on players last year, some of which were playing on other teams)

well if they get uggla he'll take up at least 12 mill per year for a resigning. i personally don't see how a hill+lind package would be able to net us a 24 year old outfielder like rasmus

I know, but I'm meaning someone along those lines, I don't think the Cards would trade him anyway.

I think if the Jays do acquire Uggla they'd likely move him to 3rd base. He's definitely a below average 2nd baseman, but likely has the ability to be average-to-good at 3rd.
Hill has been up and down at bat the past few years, but if he can settle down somewhere in between his highs and lows and have a lot more support in the line-up by adding Uggla and Ramirez then I think he's a solid guy to keep around. I don't really believe that "protection" really has a significant impact on a hitter, but I do think that having better bats in the lineup would settle down Hill and let him play his game instead of trying to become the big middle of the lineup hitter (which he isn't).

I believe if the Jays acquired Uggla, Uggla would play 2nd and Aaron Hill would move to 3rd. If has been mentioned for awhile that Hill would be open to switch to 3rd if required.

Why would the Jays want an Outfielder? I would think the immediate requirements are 3rd Baseman, 1st Baseman and Relief Pitching help plus a closer.
With Snider, Wellls and Bastista in the Field the Jays are set.

That would be the pretty dumb if the Jays did do that. Hill is far and away the better 2nd baseman. Moving him to 3rd wouldn't do anything to increase his value defensively.
The only way this would happen is if Uggla outright refused to move to 3rd (in which case I think the Jays would pass on him).
