If The Simpsons was on Wednesday's at 9pm, it would have been toast a decade ago.

The show's longevity certainly has something to do with decent writing and interesting characters, but you can't deny that it's also the perfect show for the "Sunday night, turn your brain off" timeslot.

Did we seriously get to page 5 and there is no mention of the greatest episode of all time?

Last Exit to Springfield from season 4 was a MASTERPIECE.

Haven't seen it mentioned yet, but the Sideshow Bob Rake gag in epside "Cape Feare" is the stuff of legends. Apparently the episode was too short so they used this bit as filler.

Only clip I can find on youtube is not in English, but still just as funny!

Cape feare and Marge vs the monorail are probably my two favorite episodes of all time.

Love this thread.

I've pegged the good (and by good I mean amazing) years of Simpsons from about season 3 to season 8, with season 9 being the last of the epic episodes that would appear periodically ("The Cartridge family" - when Homer gets a gun, and "The joy of sect" - when Homer joins the Movementarians cult, come to mind).

I'll admit I stopped watching with regularity about 10 years ago, and altogether about 5 years ago as I couldn't handle watching the degradation of what was the best show on TV.

The Monorail epi was an absolute classic. But my favourite episode has to be "Last exit to Springfield" season 4, the infamous "Lisa needs braces" episode.

There is no filler in the entire episode. Every single scene advances the plot while providing hilarity.

Just one example of the random humour that was done so brilliantly.

Just noticed you beat me to the punch Bigtime. Sorry, didn't notice your post before. Glad to see others share my sentiment.

And while I'm at it, I'll just toss in this picture from one of my other personal favourite episodes:

Marge: Homer, there's a man here who can help you!
Homer: Is it Batman?
Marge: He's a scientist.
Homer: Batman's a scientist?!?

Marge: Maybe you'll enjoy learning something new.
Homer: Aw, Marge. Every time I learn something new, it pushes something else out of my brain. Remember the time I took that wine making course and I forgot how to drive?

And one of my absolute favorites:

Marge: Maybe you can take consolation in the fact that something you created is making so many people happy.
Homer: Ooh! Look at me. I'm making people happy. I'm the Magical Man from Happy Land, in a gumdrop house on lollipop laaaane.

I always love it when these Simpsons quotes pop up.

I'm in the same crowd that hasn't watch the Simpsons in the longest time now since it didn't entertaining and never matched up to the peak episodes of the earlier seasons. I don't know if I'm all that old, since I'm 20 years old. For what it's worth though, I have stopped watching Family Guy and the cartoon shows in general many years back as well.

Things I say on a regular basis that I first heard on the Simpson's:

- You'll have to speak up, I'm wearing a towel.

- Comereaminute, Oh yeah

- If I could say a few words. . . I'd be a better public speaker.

- Save me jeebuz.

I remember when the Simpson's first came out, the show was extremely controversial. My school banned all Simpson's clothes because they were deemed offensive. One day I wore my Bart sweater, which said "Don't have a cow man", and was sent home. This was a regular public school in Saskatoon. . . then again. . . we said the Lord's prayer every morning.

Forgot one of my favorites... Secrets of a Successful Marriage

How can a show have two different hilarious lie detector jokes?

Anyone who considers Family Guy to be the better show probably has a royal blue crayon lodged in their brain.

Greatest thing in existence!

Another couple of classic Simpson's sayings that have had their mark... (Edit, apparently SMRT was spoken for....)

Also, The Simpson's homage to Kyle Wellwood!

I'd say its prime was seasons 4-6, so many classics I don't even know where to start. My 3 favourite eps are from these seasons, one from each:

4- Last Exit to Springfield (dental plan)
5- $pringfield (Mr. Burns' Casino)
6- Homer Badman (Gummi de Milo/sexual assault)

It's up with Seinfeld as my all-time favourite TV shows, but it's literally been bad longer than its been good.

That was one of the worst episodes in the history of the Simpsons! Barb dancing inside a snake? Ugh.....

I was either in grade 9 or 10 when that episoe aired, the next day at school a chinese friend was dubbed Mr. Sparkle. The name stuck and for 3 years he was known as that to about 200+ students.

Bart: Hey, is that homer?
Lisa: Either that or Batman really let himself go.
