This Nenshi character better personally ensure that MY commute is immune from this new fangled phenomenon called winter. And it better not cost me a cent more in property taxes.

That's right, it did clear up - I remember the weather at the Grey Cup was awesome. But there were those crazy ice storms in late November, where the city was paralyzed in the evening rush hour one Friday night because of all the icy hills.

Of course if it's not, I'll have to leave for the airport 4 hours before my flight and then sit around in the lounge for another 4 hours waiting for my delayed flight to come up. And upon arriving in Montreal, I'll need to reschedule my Frankfurt connection, probably through a different European city, and lose at least a day's pay for arriving late.
|
Amateur, you should have flown right from Calgary to Frankfurt, hopefully minimizing any snow related delays.

Last year I got burned by an early snowfall and couldn't get my summers off in time. I just did one car on Friday, so I'm halfway there. Because I use winters on both cars, both sets of my summer tires are actually summer tires (not all seasons). They're cheaper and better for non-winter conditions, but as soon as you get a little ice on the slightest of inclines, you're done.
I think that this is the first time I have been able to get the summer to winter changeover almost spot on. And the fact that I was able to wait until mid-November to actually need them just shows how nice of an October and November we've had. Not that anyone will remember that after tonight!

It was the day the Flames were at Detroit. I remember waiting for the 301 from 4:30pm to 8:00pm before taking the train and having my girlfriend pick me up at Crowfoot. While walking to her car I slipped and fell on my bum.

I remember having a drink with a friend after work, and in hindsight, that hour at the pub set me back 3 hours because of the weather as I would have been a lot closer to home (or at home) when things started to freeze. But yes, I do remember the game being on the radio because a) it made the situation much more bearable, and b) I actually got to listen to the entire game on my commute that usually takes 30 minutes.

Most Infinitis and Mercedes have better snow traction systems than the average 4wd.

yes, it was an option (G37X) and mercedes has their 4matic option on all their models.

Rear drive plus traction control can only get you so far though. on a snowy hill with crap tires and you just spin your tires slower. Ferraris also had a "snow" setting but i wouldn't be keen on taking those out to the mountains.

Logging roads in the middle of the winter are the best place to learn how to do ice driving. Sure, you might feel like you're going to have a heart attack on every corner, but hey, I'm a better driver for it.

I've been running my winter tires for about a month now. I guess I was a little too early, but I guess better safe than sorry. This is my third year with the tires, so it should last another 3 years before I need to switch them.

Uhhh... how?
With a rwd vehicle which is what 90% of Infinities and Mercedes are, all the car can do is limit power to the rear wheels through application of the rear brakes... I can do that in my 1996 Truck too...
Seriously people who rely on stuff like ABS and Traction control scare me more than anything... Learn to Threshold brake and learn how to apply throttle and steering input to get where you want to go.
Driving in Calgary=Scary.
