Good point, although mitigated a bit in that I think most people agree the middle years weren't great. The debate seems to be whether or not it has substantially improved recently.

Oh ok then I would agree. What I've been saying all along tho is that the current product-improved or not- doesn't come close to season 3-6
One major limitation The Simpsons has to deal with is the characters never age. There are only so many go back to school, schools out for summer etc. scenarios they can do. The flashback and flash forward episodes help of course, but it is something they have to really work around.
I still love the show but I do think it's lost some of its shine. But even so, still one of the best shows on T.V.
I've been a Simpsons fan since the beginning, and I think its still good. I think age of the viewer has a lot to do with it, and just running out of situations.
That said, Homer at the Bat is probably my favorite, and of course, its Season 3...
Edit: In this season's episode MoneyBART, Mike Scioscia makes an appearance, and Marge says "I thought you got radiation poisoning when you were working at the Nuclear power plant."
Add me in as a Season 3 fan. Homer at the Bat is one of the best episodes I've seen.
Daaaaaaa-rylllll
Daaaaaaa-rylllll
Also this line from another classic episode:
"Attention workers, we have completed our evaluation of the plant. We regret to announce the following lay-offs, which I will read in alphabetical order: Simpson, Homer.
Just because I'm a little bored I want to remind everyone how amazing "You Only Move Twice" from Season 8 is. One of my favs right up there with Marge vs the Monorail.

Homer: Uh... you have any sugar around here?
Hank Scorpio: Sugar? Sure.
[takes two handfuls of sugar out of his pockets]
Hank Scorpio: There you go. Sorry it's not in packages. Want some cream?
[reaches back into his pockets]
Homer: Uh... I... no.
Whenever I watch this episode I always wish Homer would have been able to stay in Cypress Hill continuing to work for Hank Scorpio.
Quote:
Hank Scorpio: Uh, hi, Homer. What can I do for you?
Homer: Sir, I need to know where I can get some business hammocks.
Hank Scorpio: Hammocks? My goodness, what an idea. Why didn't I think of that? Hammocks! Homer, there's four places. There's the Hammock Hut, that's on third.
Homer: Uh-huh.
Hank Scorpio: There's Hammocks-R-Us, that's on third too. You got Put-Your-Butt-There.
Homer: Mm-Hmm.
Hank Scorpio: That's on third. Swing Low, Sweet Chariot... Matter of fact, they're all in the same complex; it's the hammock complex on third.
Homer: Oh, the hammock district!
Hank Scorpio: That's right.
Quote:
Marge Simpson: Mr. Scorpio, this house is almost too good for us. I keep expecting to get the bum's rush.
Hank Scorpio: We don't have bums in our town, Marge, and if we did they wouldn't rush, they'd be allowed to go at their own pace
Quote:
Hank Scorpio: By the way, Homer, what's your least favorite country? Italy or France?
Homer: France.
[Scorpio adjusts a giant laser cannon pointing towards the sky]
Hank Scorpio: Heh heh heh. Nobody ever says Italy...

Bart: So, what you in here for?
Remiedial Child #1: I'm from Canada and everyone thinks I'm slow, eh.
Remiedial Child #2: I fell off the jungle gym and when I woke up I was in here.
Remiedial Child #3: I start fires!

I think, too, that because The Simpsons was so groundbreaking and fresh when it first aired, it made its first few years that much better.
I remember being in awe of the very first episode. Forget the cleverness, it was so edgy. Bart said things like "hell" and "damn" and "eat my shorts". Even the name Krusty was something we all snickered at. It introduced a dysfunctional family that most people could relate too. Married With Children was also dysfunctional but it was nowhere near as clever and extremely repetitive. Everybody watched The Simpsons. Even parents well outside the intended demographic were laughing with their kids.
All this makes it almost impossible to live up to the glory years, no matter what they write.

UN member #2: Maybe it just collapsed on its own. UN member #1: We can't take that chance.
UN member #2: You always say that. I want to take a chance!

Tonights episode pretty much ripped off elements of the Simpson's where Homer bought Lisa a horse and had to work two jobs to keep it, until Lisa had a guilty reaction.
It also ripped off elements of the Lisa episode where she didn't want to follow her dads stupid genes.
As the years go by, I really have started to dislike Lisa centric episodes.

tonights episode wasnt bad but i found myself chuckling here and there, rather than the deep belly laughs from earlier years. i did enjoy nelson tho, he's always great
I just watched the episode from earlier this season where Grandpa gives everyone $50. I loved the gags about Skinner and Supernintendo Chalmers fighting over an $11-an-hour job, and the Chris Hansen part. I may not have burst out laughing during the episode, but its still a great show.
every new episode of the simpsons still gets 15-20 million viewers, to put this in perspective, the series finale of lost got 10 million viewers. It's never going away.

The best part was Homer rolling big league chew in a fruit roll up like some sort of epic candy cigar.

As with ANY TV show, it all comes down to numbers. people still watch this show in droves, and that's why it has been renewed. The entire business is about generating good ratings for commercial revenue $$$, and the Simpsons is still a top 20 show at times.Follow the $$$ whenever debating the merits of a show still being good enough to be made or not, and not how good one thinks it is personally. I myself wont/dont watch it any longer and havent in years, but lots still do and if i was running things on FOX or even a local station buying syndicated shows, this one would be on my radar every year.
