I find atheists more annoying then fundamentalists in a lot of ways.
If a Mormon/Christian comes to my door to spread the good news, I can politely say I don't agree with them and they go away without argument. They even wish me a good day, and possibly offer a nice parting gift (I got a cookie last time, it was delicious).
Any time I've come across an atheist who is spouting off, if you disagree with anything they say they come at you with twin barrels of smug "science" backed arguments and won't let up until you agree with them.
How many threads are started on this forum discussing the "truth" of god and the salvation and whatever else Christians believe? Compare that to the number of atheist threads.

Where else do you think we could "spout off"? Church?
Perhaps we just love discussing the merits, or lack thereof, of theists worldwide right her on good ole CalgaryPuck?
When was the last time you had an atheist come knocking at your door or send flyers to your mailbox asking you to join our movement?

You don't see the difference between what you've said? One is coming to your door, the other is engaged in an existing conversation. Totally different circumstances.
This thread is one discussion thread among many, no one requires anyone to read it, so you can easily go away without an argument if you wish.
And even if there was an atheist coming to your door, does that represent all atheists? I've had polite people at my door, and I've had not so polite ones that are aggressive. I've been witnessed to on the streets in highly offensive and aggressive ways. Heck I've done the witnessing on the streets in what was probably taken as an aggressive way back when I did that kind of thing.
Do some Christians picketing a funeral represent all Christians? Of course not.
Taking a big group of people and painting them all with the same brush is just an easy way to feel superior to a group.

So because Christians don't start threads about what interests them then that's the atheist's fault somehow? That doesn't make much sense.
Why pick that? Why not point out the number of political threads vs. the # of Christian threads? Those annoying people interested in politics discussing what interests them...
What exactly is it that you are proposing then? That atheists not be allowed to discuss things that interest them?

Annoying? Atheists aren't ignorant enough to knock on someones door, and if they ever did they wouldn't be looking for donations either.

The problem as I see it with a lot of atheists, including a lot in this thread is a lack of understanding about what drives religion. They are far too focused on the dogmatic beliefs the religious say the believe in, when they should be concentrating on the social dynamic of religion.
That's why you have Christians in this thread saying "atheists are more passionate about this than Christians are." The core part about religion is the social outlet it provides most people and they will show allegiance to any beliefs that allow them to maintain this outlet. So when questioned about these beliefs they waffle and say "what are you getting so worked up about?" The belief is not the primary function of their religion.
So Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins are misguided in their attempts to fight religion in that they think people actually hold to these beliefs strongly, instead of realizing that people use religion as a way to identify with a group and form a social network (tribalism, if you will). Showing off graphs about the inconsistencies in the Bible isn't going to change anyone. An "us v. them" strategy will only cause them to entrench farther against reason.

Yeah? So?
I've got a sign on my front door explicitly stating "No Agents, Canvassers or Solicitors" that the JWs and Mormons habitually ignore (although I haven't heard back from the Mormons since I turned the garden hose on 'em so maybe they got the message).
When athiests have TV Networks, radio stations and indoctrination centers in every neighbourhood you might have a case.

Again, this is my own experience : I've just found it's pointless trying to have any sort of conversation with atheists about the nature of the world. There is no conversation, just a lecture about how "science" tells us the truth.
And of course, science is infallible, objective and never open to interpretation.

Are you suggesting we should just sit back and let it happen as it has for the past 2000 years? What would you suggest we do?

So your saying religion is simply a "social"? Further you are suggesting that the social dynamic of man cannot be fulfilled without religion?

It is fair game but it also makes Athiests no better than the Christians.

Do like the Christians do and try to shove your message down the throats of people. I don't approve of what either do and wish both would keep their messages to themselves.

Why is it wrong for anyone to buy advertising space to spread whatever message they want to?
None of those billboards is particularly offensive, hateful or illegal (well, except for that laughable syllogism).

Well hell thats simple.
Cant remember a single time an atheist has knocked on doors, sent flyers, created a church, all in the name of forcing something down someones throat.
Discussion is good, it brings forth ideas and if you cant stomach those ideas you should likely stay out of threads like this. We would hate to give you ulcers.

Hey, if you got a better theory than Einstein, Darwin, Mendel or any other scientist, feel free to step up to the plate and knock one out of the park, Slugger.
Scientists love to disprove each other. That's how they roll. Come up with the better solution and prove how you solved it and the Nobel is yours.

You don't need to knock on doors or send flyers to get your message out. Athiests do an effective job with their billboards and bus ads. Getting people to think and question.

Nobody is giving me ulcers. That's a ridiculous assumption on your part. I'm merely expressing a point of view here.
