I'm with YenMan - it's all overpriced crap. I like my desserts, and, honestly, I can't see much difference between Crave and whatever you can get at Coop.

Not sure macaroons are it either, but it's not a bad alternative. The kid inside of me wants to get a Philips ice-cream cake.
Wtf...when the hell did I start caring about this stuff?!?

Yeah, but those are the details worth caring about. Good cake and pizza/wings for the midnight buffet!

In hindsight, I should of convinced the wife to have a mountain of crullers for a cake.

Very true. I told my gf she can do whatever she wants with the rest of the wedding, as long as I get to take care of the food and the music. Those are the only things that matter.

I don't remember the name of the place, but I tried a few Cupcakes in Vancouver that were actually filled inside. They seemed worth it t me. Took me two sittings to eat them. Seemed bigger than others.

I like cupcakes, but I like cakes in general. For the most part, I think these boutique places are good, but not great. Most definitely over priced, but I'll pay it on occasion. My favourite cupcake in town is actually from Lazy Loaf & Kettle. It is moist, flavourful and does not taste as ridiculously sweet as all of the popular ones.
As for it being a fad, that is absolutely true. So many foods go this route. What is missing right now is a significant chain taking off. The basic pattern is usually:
- A bunch of small places start popping up
- Some chains start popping up as the next great franchise to own
- They die down. Most of the small places go out of business and often just one franchise company sticks around with a much smaller footprint than they had at their peak.
I've seen this pattern for food items such as: frozen yogurt, bagels, smoothies. This appears to be happening with tea joints (e.g. Atomic, Teaopia). Macaroons seem to be heading there too.
There is always the next "it" food.

I agree with this. Take that Cupcake place in Vancouver. Those two woman opened it in 2002 I believe and they only have a few locations I think. It's pretty expensive for a franchise. I don't know if there is a franchise in Canada that has more than say 10.
Those two women were actually 3 months behind in paying their suppliers and they didn't even have $10 000 to put down on a future location. They showed all of that on their TV show.

The fuss over a "Premium Cupcake" is pretty stupid. They're targeted at the same people willing to pay $6.00 for a cup of coffee.
Wake up people....in what kind of world are cupcakes and coffee considered luxuries or delicacies?
|
Exactly. The marketers found a way to sell you a small piece of fancied up cake for a ridiculous price.

And they are all over the internet on food blogs too, a craze I can not understand at all. Colorants and sugar is all they are.

No way man. The dude who did our wedding cake specialized in these and they are fantastic. I'm not a sweets guy, but these were fantastic. Amazing flavours.

Where can you even get a $6.00 cup of coffee? I don't think I've seen even the largest cup go for over $3 (which would be more than one cup in size)

I can't even answer that. The most I have ever paid is when I usually get Second Cup or Starbucks drinks like a Vanilla Bean Latte or White Chocolate Mocha.
I think I usually pay very close to $5 for a large. There is no way regular coffee is anywhere near close to that amount.

Cupcakes suck. especially the ones from Crave. They are so sweet its like instant diabetes.
Mochi is 1000 times better.

Its a ripoff. Honestly, how much do you think it costs to make that cupcake? 50 cents or less would be my guess. Could you imagine paying $3 for a donut from Tim Hortons?
