An interesting contrail cropped up off the coast of San Clemente, Orange County, California on December 31st 2009. The curious shape led some people to think it’s a missile launch, which it does kind of look like (all taken from San Clemente)

I don't get it. If they see it so often, why are people in the area making such a fuss of it? And why wouldn't the CBS air crew (who shot the video), have seen it before?

Because so many people want things to be more exciting than they really are, and humans are horrible eye witnesses.
Why did I start reading the comments on CNN's story on this, people are so fking dumb.

Having lived on the west coast of Florida, (Tampa) for years and watching launches from the Cape, I would say Missile!...
Very familiar contrails. Also have been a fan of aircraft for more that 55 years, and growing up around and on military bases I can say for a fact this is no aircraft contrail...military or otherwise. Notice the volume of the contrail vs the point of origin..way more than any airplane I've ever seen.

That was no jet-and if it was a Jet leaving a contrail behind it, how come the FAA did not disclose any information about it being on radar? It's still a set of conditions that doesn't happen all the time, specific humidity range at a specific altitude with a specific temperature range and flights at the right time, skies have to be mostly clear, at the right time of day (half an hour earlier or later and this is less dramatic) etc etc...
So combine that with how often the news crew is up or how often people in the area happen to be outside at the time looking up, there's always going to be people that have never seen something like it before.
Well, as surprising as it may sound, the object seems to have been simply an aircraft contrail, with tricks of perspective making it look like a missile flying away from you, when in fact it was an aircraft flying toward you!
