Oh goddamnit, we already went through this in this very thread. If YOU are breaking the law (speeding) YOU don't get to decide what's an acceptable amount to speed.
You and other people who use this argument don't realize how self-centered and stupid it sounds when you pick an arbitrary illegal speed which is okay to do, because you've determined it's okay, and then turn around and say "well yeah, of course I'll stay in the left lane and block the guy going (insert another arbitrary illegal speed) because he's an a-hole.
Just stop being a prick on the road and move over. Don't try and police the road, we have police for that..

Nasty nasty, you guys are being nasty to Tiger.
His post says everyone in the right lane is doing 100, and he's doing 120.
Your dreaming if you expect him to jump on the brakes (slowing everybody down) and squeeze into the right lane to make Mr. 130 happy.
And saying doing 20 over is policing the road is a ridiculous statement.

That wasn't my point at all. My point was if he's going to speed, then where do you draw the line?
What if someone is going 110 and sees someone coming up behind him at 120 and says "F-it, I'm already speeding, no one needs to go over 110, that prick can can go f himself"?
^^^^
This scenario is exactly like the one tiger described, only now tiger is the one being inconvenienced, because someone else has picked their own arbitrary illegal speed to police the left lane with.

Respectfully disagree with you on this one. If there is line of 5 cars doing 100 and I'm doing 120, as Tiger said, I'm passing all 5 of those cars regardless of whether there is someone doing 130 behind me or not and whether there is a slot for me to get into the right lane or not. Just because he's doing 130 does not mean he gets priority over me. We're both going faster than the normal flow of traffic, so let off the gas a bit, wait for me to pass at 120, then you can bump it back up to 130 once I'm done passing.

Well, obviously if you can't move over, you will have to stay in the left lane. Once you've passed all those cars you speak of, you should move over because you aren't willing to go the same speed as the guy behind you. I think you mean the same thing as what you are disagreeing with.

Oh, I may have read that wrong, as well. If he meant he'll go 120 to pass vehicles, but then move back out of the left lane as soon as he's done passing, so that the guy going 130 can now pass him, then I agree with him.

I guess it all depends on how much of a gap there is. A few car lengths? Not a good idea. But sometimes people like to stay in the left lane because in about 20 seconds they'll be passing someone else. If there's time and room to get over without endangering anyone, you should. I agree that you shouldn't have to slam on the brakes to get into a tiny gap.
After re-reading Tiger's post, I may have lost their main point by interpreting the second paragraph as a separate statement. On it's own it sounded ignorant. In the context of passing cars with no possible gap to move into, it seems reasonable. I apologize if I misinterpreted that - in my mind I pictured someone cruising in the left lane at their own arbitrary speed limit, even after finishing their passing.

I think that gist of what myself and others are saying is: if you're done passing, move over. If there's a gap, move over. And if someone is passing in front of you but you want to go faster, give them a bit of time and room and they'll hopefully do the safe thing and get back over to the right when an opportunity presents. Provided they are looking for that opportunity.

Finally you guys picked it up. LoL
If you drive a P/U it's really bad because Mr. 130 in a car can't see that I'm passing traffic, I've had Mr 130 tailgate so close then swerve into the right lane and slam the brakes because the traffic I'm passing is there.

And tailgating me when I'm following 10 others is just stupid, and all too common.

Anyway, I think you're trolling on this issue because nobody can seriously be that r-tarded.
|
Seriously? You call him r-tarded and after you make a statement like this?
1. Big trucks
2. RVs
3. Car with issues and trying to get to a gas station or safe place to pull off, and yes, has his fourways on.
4. Car riding on his donut which may have a listed speed limit on the tire sidewall which happens to be lower than the posted speed limit on the highway.
5. Bus (some older buses in the city I have noticed only do 80-90 on Deerfoot and sometimes in the middle lane.
One might argue that those are all different circumstances, but they are all very regular occurring instances of vehicles travelling at less than the speed. limit. Also, it is a speed LIMIT. It is not a YOU MUST DRIVE THIS SPEED AT ALL TIMES OR ELSE!
(Disclaimer: I do NOT condone people doing 60-70-80 in the right lane on any highway, but 80, 90, 100 is quite common and a fact of life.)

Trucks and buses will stay in the middle lane because nobody will let them move over for merging traffic.
Some drivers will risk life and limb to avoid merging behind a bus or truck.

Settle down there, big guy. You're shouting so loud my ears are bleeding.
Of course there are going to be exceptions. I think it's painfully obvious we're talking in general terms here, mostly about strugglers that have a general lack of awarness about their surroundings and as such, inconvenience others and make the roads more dangerous in spite of thinking just the opposite.
But yes, sometimes farm equipment will be going slower. Excellent point.

Guess what, 3 and 4 apply to your "not drive in the right lane with your four ways on like a dope" comment. Your post did not specifically state your added circumstances as you pointed above in response to me. It's great to be able to reply and make it sound like you meant something more in your original post, isn't it?
As well, I don' think I mentioned farm equipment in my list, but great addition!
Edit to add: Also, if some 'dope' as you say is driving in the left lane with his blinkers on and is less aware of his surroundings than a more capable driver, isn't that exactly what you want him to do? His blinkers are notifying you that he is a hazard, as hazard lights are meant for. I'd argue that he has the same right to be on the road as the guy who wants to do 140 in the left lane on a 110 highway.

On Saturday I saw a guy with a space-saver tire merging from Canyon Meadows Drive onto Deerfoot where he proceeded to go 70 km/h in the right lane. He was an absolute moron, but by your definition that was totally acceptable. There are probably a dozen places he could have gone to buy a new tire or have his repaired that didn't involve going onto Deerfoot, yet there he was.
Also, the majority of the time people have highway issues that result in them limping along in the right lane are their own fault (lack of car maintenance, poor planning, driving an unfit car, etc.). It's tough to have sympathy for those people when they make the road dangerous for everybody around them because of their neglignce.
Other times there are unavoidable circumstances that lead to a person driving slow in the right lane. Nobody has a problem with those guys - that's obvious.
With RVs, it is so lame of people to buy a giant trailer and pull it with their underpowered tow vehicle and then cruise around the mountains 30 km/h or less under the speed limit. If you can't keep up, get off the road. Why would you even defend some a-hole like that?

are you an ignoramus or do you just play one on TV?
People driving RV's and other larger/heavy vehicles will adjust their speed based on a number of factors. Weather, slope, load, # of lanes, and what their exit strategy is so that when cowboys like you cut them off, they dont kill an entire family trying to avoid getting killed by you.

Bah, hardly anyone does the speed limit on deerfoot or hwy2 anymore.
130 is the new 100.

Obviously the safer route for someone in that situation would be to stick to a non-highway situation, but this happens. The safer route for someone who wants to drive 130,140 is on a controlled speed circuit, but to you he's a-ok on the Deerfoot?

Really? Do you know this for a fact? Have you seen statistics?

I'm not defending that a-hole because it's not very common. (remember I added the disclaimer where I said I do NOT condone driving 60,70 on the highway) More common is big motorhomes who drive the same speed or a bit less than some big trucks. Those are not a-holes, but common examples of people driving slower than the speed limit in the right lane.

This actually grinds my gears quite a bit whenever I drive up to Edmonton. There are people that just refuse to move over to the right lane, even if they're not passing people. I always have to cut over to the right to pass them.
What's weird is that when I drive to Medicine Hat, people tend to obey the rules of the road and stick to the right. It really is just going to and from Edmonton that people drive like jerkwads. Not sure why that is.
