Default What motivates you at work?

Just wondering what motivates people to perform at work. (as in... work really hard, not working just hard enough).

Positive recognition? Negative re-inforcement? Goals/objectives? Money (comission)? Bonuses? Raises? Not wanting to starve? A cold beer on Friday afternoon? Taking care of your spouse or kids?

For me, setting and reaching goals, and recognition that I am doing the right things. Sure I always want more money... but I don't know if it motivates me. I've never really been offered a raise for a job well done... usually it's a last minute raise if I find another opportunity or something. If it was a certain thing I could accomplish to make more money... Like "hit target X and receive % raise" I would absolutely.

I personally can be motivated by negative things once in a while... like if my sales suck one week and I'm called out. I think it's the wrong type of motivation though. But beat me down too often and I get disinterested. I took one of those "DISC" Personality tests and it re-affirmed that for me.

(For anyone who knows what DISC is I am a high I and then a medium D. Have you taken one? What are you?)

What motivates you at work?

Goals/objectives. I really don't care about money, I make more than enough and I live a pretty simple lifestyle.

To make enough money for the hookers behind Zellers on 17th ave.

It's hard making $5 these days.

My current job...just doing it well enough to get the least amount of **** possible. It's not my career path, just a several month job to save some money.

I've had to sales before and I couldn't do it. I hate, hate, hate selling people things.

For me, it's deadlines. If I have a lot of work to do, I take one day to do it. If I don't have a lot of work to do, I still take one day to do it.

Money/Exit Opportunities, which will lead to more money.

A false sense of superiority over the underachieving friends that I have.

I find this too. Why is it some days you have minimal to do and it takes all day and others you are crammed up to your neck and still get it all done?

I get one day per week to work from home. I would rather have that than a raise.

Oh man, I hope everyone else is wasting time at work when they write in this thread.

"Work to live" here. I'm motivated by the freedom to do what I want when I want! When not at work of course...

I think positive reccognition, increased responsibility, and constant challenge motivates me.

Being recognized as a leader and go-to guy.

Money is nowhere close to that factor. That comes with the respect.

Fear, I want to be feared. I want to be that authority figure that can crush your career, by design and my own desires.

Good, hard work makes the beatings less severe and less frequent.

My only real motivation is not to be hassled, that, and the fear of losing my job. But you know, Bob, that will only make someone work just hard enough not to get fired.

Okay not really, but its pretty close.
