Inglewood is a great neighbourhood, as is Ramsay which is just west of Inglewood.

I lived there for a while, no problems with crime. I thought my car had been stolen once, but it turns out the street cleaners just towed it onto a neighbouring street. There's a lot of bottle-picker traffic around the central and west end of Inglewood, but not so much in the area you're talking about.

Inglewood is awesome. It's the oldest neighborhood in Calgary (9th ave East used to be main street), the houses have character and the area is revitalizing rapidly.
The biggest issue with living there is the lack of close grocery shopping, although there are constant rumours that a farmers market is going into the construction project at the west end of 9th.
If I was looking to move, it's the first part of the city I'd live in.

I just got back from viewing the place. Its a nice place. I like that 9th ave SE is so close to where I stay, it seems like a cool place. I like that its not "corporate-y". It seems like a quiet neighbourhood. The Calgary Police Crime Map showed not too many dangerous incidents in the past month.
The place where I will be staying is close to the YWCA. Is there a lot of bottle-picker traffic there?
Also, I noted that Ceili's Irish Pub is close by, anyone been to there? How are the clientele? Also, are hockey games shown there?
Thanks for all your input guys/gals. its greatly appreciated.

Just saw your post after I had replied to the others. Thanks for your input.
When I drove around there, it seemed like a really cool place. I could easily see myself unwind there on a Friday after work.
The lack of grocery should not be too big of a concern for me, as I have a car. I could easily drive up to Forest Lawn and get something there. However, do you know if there is like a Macs or a 7-11 that I could buy emergency stuff, like Milk, in case I run out?

I was basically looking for a place to stay thats close to down town and not an apartment and not a basement suite.
Can you say why the YWCA is dangerous? Also, is it more from personal experience or do you know of news reports regarding crime and stuff? Per the Calgary City Crime map, there were no grave crimes like murders, just stuff like theft. But I usually keep my car clean and try not to leave anything in there, and its got engine ######ers, so I am not too worried about my car.
I would appreciate if you could show me news reports and stuff.

I loved the area, used to live in a loft on 9th ave near the gunshop. The only complaint for me like above was the lack of close by grocery store. I never felt unsafe there but you did hear of problems with drunks or homeless on occassion.

You mean the YWCA building down by Blackfoot and 9th, right? (I think Fotze probably thought you meant the downtown YWCA, which is an awful neighbourhood). Yeah, that's a good area. The bottle-picker traffic is centered around the recycling depot at around 9th ave and 11 street. Many mornings I was awoken to the sound of shopping carts rattling by on the street below. But not an issue for the area you're talking about. You will probably get a lot of overhead airplane noise, and occasional train noise depending on how close you are to the tracks.
You're talking about renting? Because if you're looking at buying property, values in that neighbourhood will depend a lot on what happens with the brewery buildings.

I live in a different part of downtown but have a lot of buddies that live out there. Besides the lack of grocery stores that a few have mentioned it's a very sustainable community especially if you work dowtown. Crime is not an issue.

Yes, the YWCA is the on just south of Blackfoot and 9th. That was the one I was talking about.
I am not too worried about airplane noise, and I think I am far enough from the train tracks that the noise wont affect me too much.
Yeah, I was looking to rent. I already saw the place this morning. Just wanted to see what CP's opinion was regarding the neighbourhood.

I live in Inglewood and would agree there are really no worries about safety.
You're probably more likely to get attacked by a pack of coyotes than a person in Inglewood.
But there are a lot of things that annoy me about the neighbourhood.
The lack of grocery stores, as mentioned. There are a few useful little corner stores.
The community's reluctance to develop. When that Starbucks opened last year, the uproar was hilarious. Something other than an antique shop opens and the locals are out with their pitchforks. I kind of like living in the 21st century. Not everyone here does.
And then there's the traffic. All you suburbanites coming in from out yonder driving down our main street at 35 kph. This has to stop. The speed limit is 50, please stop gazing at the old buildings and pay attention to the road.
One liquor store in walking distance. It closes at 10, so you'll have to plan ahead if you need booze. Although annoying at times, I think this fact has actually improved my lifestyle!
Trains. I live right by a track and can attest that the noise could affect your life. In my case, I can no longer fall asleep without the low rumble of a train passing by. Your daily commutes will likely be dictated by their schedules rather than your own. But there is almost always a detour to go around the trains, so learn your way around!
But there are many good things.
You're right close to Deerfoot and Blackfoot so driving is convenient.
Downtown is close by.
Walking/running/bike paths. This area is really good for that.
The river if you like fishing or rafting or just plain staring at rushing water.
I think there are better neighbourhoods in Calgary than Inglewood, but you could definitely do a lot worse.

I did go through some condo's not to long ago with a buyer only to find out about a possible special assessment from what i remember to be water damage.
Other than that, its a totally different style of living that many love.
I dont think you could create another community so close to the core that would have the feeling of being so far out of the city.

A couple places I've enjoyed in Inglewood
Village Cantina - Very nice Mexican restaurant with a Jazz club on the top floor. Built in an old motel I believe.
Hose and Hound Pub - Pub inside an old fire hall. Bit of a dive, but a lot better than most dives.

I can think of one other and that would be Ramsay. Due to the fact that we're kind of boxed in because of the Elbow and the tracks, Ramsay really has a small town feeling. I can't drive through the community without seeing someone I know.

There was a segment on ctv the other day about people freaking out over the noise from the trains in the area. No idea how bad it is.

I love Inglewood. If I moved back to Calgary full time, it would be one of the areas at look at the most.
