I dont remember any of the other commissioners criticizing the NHL whatsoever. I would think they should be congratulating him after the fact though, as the NHL has a model all sport leagues will want to acheive at some point.

Stern’s comments are in line with him saying last week that the league is seeking to decrease its expenses from player salaries by $750 million to $800 million, or an about 33 percent.

A hard cap would be met by strong opposition from not only the players’ union, but also from large market teams that are willing and able to outspend other teams. The Lakers and Celtics, for example, have built championship-caliber teams by spending over the cap and paying the luxury tax.

“You know, that's why I have white hair,” Stern said. “It's a detail that has not been worked out yet ... at all."

More like the stars have more power in the NBA. The NFL has proven that it is the game more than the players who drive revenues while in the NBA, especially since they've focused on selling the stars, they can't just throw out scrubs and expect people to watch.

Rosters are a lot smaller in basketball than other sports and one player makes a bigger difference then in any other sport.

Why not? (I'm not an NFL expert, please enlighten me!) Is it because of the set contracts for draft picks being too high? Designated player? Cap too high? Too much labour strife?

NFL has non-guaranteed contracts and fantastic revenue sharing, which are great for the game and would be great for the NHL.

Aside from unproven rookies getting waaay too much money, they're cap is about as best as you could want it to be. The post above gives reason why.

Does this play out like the NHL lockout of 2005 or like the earlier attempts by the NHL to get cost certainty?

Stern has his work cut out for him if the big market teams aren't on board, as they could do what NYR TML did to the NHL and undermine the attempt in their own best interest.
