There's a market for big box retailers because of the surrounding population in all the nearby small communities. In fact the choice of the location for the new Costco came down to the Shawnessy area in Calgary or Okotoks. They chose Okotoks for the reasons I stated. Besides you don't need high paying jobs to shop at these stores

Not really. They're huge companies that divest all their profits back to their shareholders elsewhere. Sure there's some unskilled jobs that Calgary loses but those sort of jobs aren't a big concern in a hot job market like Alberta's.
The bigger issue is that they make the parasite communities more attractive since they become more and more like suburban Calgary but with lower housing costs.

Okotoks is not cheap for housing costs. High River is much the same with Calgarians flocking to these small communities to live driving up house prices. At one time it might have been cheaper but it sure hell isn't anymore.

Where in Shawnessy was a proposed location for a Costco? A storm water pond? There isn't room in Shawnessy for a Costco.

People are talking about transit ridership being down due to the fees. According to this, LRT ridership was down modestly (less than one percent) from April 09 to April 10. It's also up 3.88% from Jun 09 to Jun 10. Ridership on the entire system follows a similar trend.

Interesting to see some numbers. I've been taking the train everyday for a number of years now and to me it looked like it was at least 30% less people taking the McKnight train since they had the extra fees. I think some of the hit was also due to the recession. Although, it seems more busy recently.

I don't think the economies of one of those stores are that simple. Think of a small item like snow removal for a giant Costco parking lot. That would be a sweet contract for any snow-removal company. There's lawn maintenance companies, building maintenance companies, etc. that all benefit from a building like this in the community.
If consumers are spending money there that they earned in Calgary, I'd prefer the store to be in Calgary, not in a parasite community.

Yeah, I took the train today and Crowfoot was mostly full (at least the west lot). Looked like Brentwood was mostly full too, except for the overflow lot part?
It's been a few months since I last took a real look.
