Your right... i dont pay taxes... not yet, but even if i lived in the city STILL i would think it is a stupid idea, charging people 8+ dollars a day to get to work is idiotic and adds up very very fast, its even worse if your a university student or low income users. It promotes people to drive more, park illegally more, and use transit less.... a loss for everyone.
Thanks for that wit and intelligence...
Honestly im all for increasing transit safety and but the city just wants money. Why can they spend 20 million or whatever for that stupid pedestrian bridge but not bother putting proper heaters in the train.. or making it so that some Hobo dosent smokes dope on the train beside me...
Charging people to park isnt the anwser. Right now i just park at southcenter for free and walk to Anderson station, if i didnt i would have paid almost $1000 to the city.. USELESS!

Awe, muffin. $8 a day? Maybe Dad can lend you a few bucks? While he's at it, some grammar lessons will come in handy at University.
The way I see it, if you don't vote, don't bitch about politics. If you live in a parasite community, worry about that community's transit issues.

Wow. People from outside the city are going to use Calgary Transit, get used to it.

One easy solution I can see for the Canyon Meadows LRT is if the people who park for free on the street stop leaving 3 meters between them and the car in front of them when they park in the morning. You could probably fit at least another 10 to 15 cars along this stretch if everyone parked like normal human beings. Everyday I have to drive past this mess and sometimes I get lucky enough that I actually can parallel park my way into a spot (which I love because the people around me then have to Austin Powers there way out at the end of the day). But I digress...
I agree with having a proper system in place that ensures everyone who uses the transit system pays the fare. The hope being that between revenue generated from everyone paying the fare + the money saved from likely having to have less transit officials checking tickets > the amount of money generated from Park and Ride.

I have no problem with people from elsewhere using Transit. I do have an issue with entitled outsiders bitching about it. The guy doesn't pay to park anyway, so what's his problem?

This is what Nenshi said about Park-and-Ride in his platform:
Quote:
Removing the $3 Park-and-Ride fee. Naheed has called the imposition of this fee the single worst decision this Council has made – and that’s saying something! It makes using the LRT more costly and inconvenient for people who may not be able to easily get to the train by bus or walking. In a city that's not designed for convenient access to transit, we should make it easier, not more difficult. We should get rid of the parking fee.
|
I agree with Nenshi's rationale despite my general dislike of the notion of 'free' parking. I think the free park and ride is throwing Calgarians a bit of a bone - for many people getting to C-train stations isn't exactly a convenient given how the city is designed.
Nenshi did state that it may be very difficult to implement the change right away given the imminent budget shortfall that requires being addressed within a matter of a few weeks. I recall him saying the change may have to wait until next year, despite I'm sure him really not wanting to.

Some people like to complain I guess. I happen to live in a parasite community, as some call it, and use the LRT if I have any appointments downtown. Charging outsiders extra to use transit will only cause them to drive downtown further clogging up the raods.

I don't use transit and really never have, but the $3 fee is outrageous and I hope they get rid of it soon.
Just very inconvenient for people and sends a bad message. You should want people to use transit not discourage it by implementing a parking fee.

They sure are making money with the lots half full. Problem is Nenshi only has one vote and has to convince the majority of council to drop the fees. Then they would have to figure how to replace the lost revenue.

They never had that revenue before and they were doing all right. They hired a few extra security guys to run a car that gives people tickets and called that "extra security"
Yeah, more like another cash grab by giving more tickets.

I was wondering when someone would blame the bridge for this....it's like CP's own Godwin's Law, you just know it's gonna pop up eventually.

I have a question regarding the C-train. Was it funded wholely by the city coffers?
I have no proof but I'm pretty sure that the province ponied up a large portion.

I am a full time student, I work full time downtown and take transit every day from the deep SE.
It might not have been your choice to move out of the city, but it is your choice to stay there. Those who live outside the city, have chosen to do so for reasons related to cost or lifestyle choice. Just because you living there makes sense to you, doesn't mean that the entire city needs to subsidize your Calgary Transit experience.
University and low income students you almost have a point with. It is a big chunk of money if I want to pay for parking at the C-Train station every day I go to school. Luckily, for those of us who live in the city, we can walk out our door and over a couple blocks and in almost all cases get on a bus. I know if you live outside the city, this really doesn't help you much, but you can refer back to my first point if you need reminding on how this isn't the Calgary taxpayers fault.
If you are among the handful of people who do not live in an easy place to bus from or you live outside the city, there are now at least 2 park and rides in the city that you do not need to pay for. There might be more, but I am referring to the ones in the south, that are convenient to you. These exist in McKenzie Towne and Douglas Glen. As far as I have seen, they are never full and both sit right on the 302 line, which takes you directly downtown within a block of at least one east and westbound C-Train station on the line.

Since many on this board like to compare Calgary to NYC, how many free park & ride lots are over there? Or in Tokyo, London, and LA?
Why are people entitled to free parking with security, and electricity for their cars?

Before I moved to High River I paid taxes in the City of Calgary for over 25 years. My taxes helped to build most of the LRT system that Calgarians use today. So no, you're not subsidizing the few times I use the transit system.

Do your current taxes pay for it's day to day operation?
You have a point that you did contribute, but to think that the system somehow doesn't cost the taxpayers anything more now that you stopped paying Calgary taxes is a bit of a stretch.

I think that they should axe the fee, and that everyone else should take the train as a result. It'll just my commute better (I have zero intentions of taking the train myself, just think that everyone should do it).
The pure inconvenience of the charge is enough reason to get rid of it though. I stood at the station for campaign reasons over the past couple of months and watched people struggle with the machines.
As another response, the reason that people are "entitled to free parking..." is because they are paying customers for the service. Same reason that you are given free parking at Chinook Centre or most other businesses in the city that rely on your being there.

Fine. I'll drive downtown clogging up the streets providing no revenue for Calgary transit. Is not some revenue better than nothing?
