Confirmed today.
I don't know a heck of a lot about baseball but his peers certainly speak highly of him.
Quote:
"He will be an effective, excellent manager," Red Sox owner John Henry wrote in an email to the Boston Globe. "I expect him to manage in MLB for as long as he wants to. He's going to an excellent young team with a strong and smart hierarchy. The Blue Jays are going to be a force in the AL East for some time to come."
|
And Francona says...
Quote:
"Manager, GM, pitching coach, running a minor league system, you name it. He's just a special talent."

Manny Being Manny? He's apparently interested in playing for the Blue Jays...
http://tsn.ca/mlb/story/?id=338721
Soon-to-be free agent slugger Manny Ramirez is a big enough supporter of new Toronto Blue Jays manager John Farrell, that he would be willing to sign with the club.
....
"John has tremendous knowledge of the game, a very pleasant man and he trains ballplayers," Ramirez told ESPNdeportes.com. "Toronto has made a great acquisition. Farrell is a manager for whom I would like to play, and Toronto is a team I've liked since they had all those Dominican players in the '80s."
...
"I still have a lot of baseball left in me," Ramirez said. "I think that I can still bat if I keep myself healthy, and it is less probable to have an injury playing as the designated hitter."

I'm so torn about bringing the guy in. He's probably still a great talent, but such a headcase and has never not been selfish and self-centred. Based on that alone I'd say no way, but him wanting to play for the Jays is intriguing for the DH spot. It can't end well though, and will he steer the young rookies off the path...I think so.

Any time you can add a bat of Ramirez's calibre, you do. The Jays need two more good bats and maybe one good pitcher and a bullpen guy or two if Downs and Frasor are gone from being a contender for the division. The Jays have a relatively small payroll, but used to have a near 100 million dollar payroll. If Anthopolous has the green light to spend that kind of money, then someone like Ramirez might be a decent option.

Just curious, but how much money would you be willing to dish for the guy? I would say if he's genuine about wanting to play for his old coach, he'll come at a discount. That discount to me would be under $10M. No more than two years either...he'd simply be a mercenary, like he always has been.

No more than $12 mil and only for 2 years or less. He's still a good player, and we need a good DH because Lind certainly didn't do a good job there last year.

No chance, Jays managemnt would be far to worried about this type of player being around "young" club House
Manny is getting older, I would pass, I would bet the Jays are not interested.
Biggest need for the Jays in terms of hitting is to figure out the situation at first. Jays need to decide if they will convert Lind or make a trade

I'd give Lind another chance. He's shown enough potential that one year of sub-par play isn't worth dealing him out for. As for Manny, although on the face of it, the Jays would probably not be interested because of their young players, you can guarantee they'll consult their new coach to give his opinion of bringing him in. I'm also sure his opinion will carry a ton of weight if they do decide to pursue him.

Sorry I never meant the Jays would trade Lind, question is will Lind stay as a DH / part time outfielder or will he be converted to first?
If he is not converted to a 1st baseman, they need to make a trade.
As the speculation is the Jays have not shown any interest in resigning Overbay.

Where have you seen that? Not saying it's not true, but you'd think they would have taken anything for him as I doubt he will even qualifty as a Type 2 free agent, meaning the Jays lose him for nothing.
To me that indicates that they are at least considering signing him back. I hope that you have heard something concrete, I want Lind at 1B.

Based on the above story (last week).
"According to the Reno Gazette-Journal, the 33-year old free agent hasn't been contacted by the Blue Jays about next season, but he didn't rule out a return."
Basically lack of contact is a sign the Jays maybe looking in other directions.
I would be surprised if Overbay was ressigned.

I forgot where I read it yesterday, either thestar.ca or at tsn, but they speculated that the Jays may take a run at signing Jonathan Papelbon in the next couple months to be with his now ex-pitching coach. Personally, I really like the guys attitude and ability, but I can't see him at all wanting to be a Jay. It's possibly the Southern drawal, but I just can't see an all-American like him wanting to come here. If they do take a run at him, it's a clear indication the retooling is pretty much done, and they're out to win it all.

That's a strange move. He was relatively cheap at 4.75 million and would likely get 7 million in arbitration because of his saves.
Unless the Jays are looking to offer arbitration and hoping he'll decline, in order to get a sandwich pick and go after another closer, it doesn't make much sense. Unless they're thinking of making Cecil or Stewart the closer.

I'm thinking by them not picking up the option on Gregg, it is meaning a changing of the guard in the back end. While relatively cheap, Gregg was a heart attack waiting to happen in the 9th inning.
I read somewhere that Rzepczynski was throwing in the AFL and rumors about him coming in out of the bullpen next year. While it is more likely that he'll be in long relief, John Smoltz made the transition from starter to closer... so you never know. If anything, the later inning guys are going to look a whole lot different next year with Frasor and Downs set to walk as well.
