Lifetime Suspension

You quit your job to come to Calgary in the dead of winter? Seriously? I love this city but as a life long Calgarian I should warn you that there's no much going on here in December/January, certainly nothing worth travelling across the globe for.

If you go to Melbourne you will get all seasons in one day, wake up its raining and 8 degrees, 3 hours later its sunny and 25! In our summers we can get 40+ degree days sometimes 3 or 4 in a row.
If you do go places you should goto are deffinatly Melbourne, Gold Coast and Sydney. Get to see an AFL game (Australia Football) and any other sports being played, night life is okay aslong as you don't run into the wrong group of people.
Gold Coast is great, always great weather even during winter (around 20 degrees) good beaches aswell.
Deffinatly would recommend coming out here, great places all around the country.

No disrespect, but it wasn't the only reason why I quit my job, probably helps when I have another job lined up for next year, so why not make use of a couple of free months? I will be in America for a while aswell, but I don't need to justify why I'm coming over to you. The Flames are deffinatly worth travelling across the globe for, the passion I have for this team is so strong.

Should be a great time, some more suggestions:
-Go skating at Olympic Plaza
-Hit up Stephen Avenue and the newly renovated Core mall downtown
-Calgary Tower on a nice clear day for the views
-Banff/Lake Louise
-The Columbia Icefields tour (I still haven't done this, hear it is great)
-Enjoy the many lounges/bars/pubs along 17th Avenue (The Red Mile)

What kinds of bars/clubs/pubs are you into? What kind of places do you like to eat at? Are you a skiier/snowboarder? Do you play hockey (doubtful)? What kinds of things are you into?
Maybe giving the folks on here a feel for what you're into and then people can make suggestions. Many of the suggestions I've heard on here I would never want to do, while others I completely agree with.

You'll find lots to do here in the winter.
Some suggestions:
- ski/snowboard in the mountains
- hot springs in Banff
- Columbia Ice Fields
- cross-country skiing/snowshoeing in Kananaskis
- skating at Olympic Plaza
- luge/snowboarding/skiing at Canada Olympic Park
- seeing the Flames at the Dome!
- seeing the Hitmen at the Dome
- Calgary Tower
- Calgary Zoo
- Royal Tyrell Museum in Drumheller
- Lake Louise
I'm not the best person to advise on the night life, but Calgary is a fairly young city with an active night life. You should be able to find something that suits your tastes.
The weather will be cold, but you may get a chinook which will warm things up. As long as you dress warm, the cold isn't too bad.
Don't listen to the guys who say that Calgary sucks in the winter. The summer and winter are the best times to be in the area, for completely different reasons.

Join up with a group and go ice climbing in the Kananaskis or Canmore or Banff areas. Lots of guided activities available.

Not knowing how long you are going to be here for but as a new(ish) immigrant to Canada (coming from England) I am just wowed by the beauty of the snow here. It really is a 'dry' cold so quite easy to cope with. A pair of gloves, a ski jacket and a toque and you can be out and about all the time. The snow is dry and powdery and looks like a million diamonds has been scattered around your feet. Coming from Oz I am sure you will find it as awesome as I still do. Take in a Flames game, get out and talk to as many Calgarians as you can as they are the friendliest people I have ever met and just have an amazing time.

The bob sleigh run at Olympic Park
Come to our house and we will cook you a barbie! You will be very welcome. And, yes, we do still barbie in the winter!

depending what day you get here, if you like seeing different sports, come to the west final at McMahon (Stampeders Canadian football - hopefully the Stamps are hosting the west final - playoff game), second last weekend of november
should be a great game!
