NBA wants to cut player costs by one-third: Stern
Owners usually overstate the degree of their distress . . . . . but David Stern's pronouncement that he needs to cut player costs by one-third and get cost control is pretty interesting.

Definitely a potential for a lockout in this situation. At least half a season I would reckon.

The talking heads on ESPN have been claiming this since before last season...this thing is gonna get nasty, much like the NHL lockout, and Strn is taking his lead from bettman on what to achieve.

It seems only about 6 players out of 10 get any significant minutes anway.

The NBA's salary cap is uber confusing. Cap exemptions, player maximums that change depending on whether the player is retained or signed anew, luxury cap, etc. At least they have rookie caps in place... the NFL should take note.

NBA salaries are so ridiculously high anyways. What is an average bench players make? More like $3M or more. Must be nice to make that kind of money just sitting on the bench. Also, I agree with one poster with Iggy, their salary cap is so confusing.

Their CBA and cap is ridiculous. IMO, if Stern wants to cut salaries by a third, I'm sure he'll get it. NBA players are a greedy, if not stupid bunch for the most part. They'll cave really fast once they see they're not making any money. I don't think David really expects to lower salaries by a third though. It's just a bargaining position for now, but a 20% cut is more plausible...and deserved.

I think Leonsis hinted about what their really after: an NHL-style cap that has cost certainty. Small market teams are having trouble making money, and even big market teams might be doing okay with their bottom line, but are worried about how much power their players have to dictate trades and manipulate the FA system.
By my count there's five owners that have both NBA and NHL teams (Washington, Philadelphia, New York, Toronto, Colorado). If those guys want an NHL-style cap, and then you add small market teams like Sacramento, Indiana, Milwaukee, Memphis, Charlotte, Oklahoma, Cleveland, Utah, maybe Minnesota and Portland), that's about half the league right there. Some guys will definitely oppose it - Miami, for example. But I think it'll get done.

Isn't Illitch in Det looking to buy the Pistons as well?
That would be another NHL owner going over to the NBA...

That's been the rumor recently.
I believe the Lakers and Kings are both owned by AEG; and the Hawks and Thrashers are also owned by the same company.
I would think that Comcast (Philly), MSG (NY), and AEG (LA) would all have considerable pull amongst the NBA ownership. I wonder if they've built up a similar war-chest as to what the NHL had going into their lockout?

^^ The Lakers are owned by the Buss family - Magic Johnson recently sold his 10% to a local doctor this week.

David Stern, just another greedy white male. No wonder Gary Bettman was his protege. Contraction is just something that he's using as a bargaining chip. Bud Selig tried this in Minnesota and Florida, look what happened there.
Stern is claiming that NBA owners lost four hundred million last season, according to that article. Ever been to an NBA game? The average NBA team salary is 64 million US. You're telling me that each home game doesn't take in four million dollars between tickets, TV revenue, concesssions, programs, parking, etc? Get real.
Nothing will change, as another guy mentioned in this thread the average NBA bench player is making three million a year. The NBA union won't crack as easy as those hockey players did five years ago because they don't have greedy guys like Mike Commodore, who had only played 75 NHL games going into the lockout and couldn't afford to pay his rent. We're talking millionaires here, even the rookie players, not bush league AHL wannabes that were making up a large part of the NHLPA and pushing for a settlement. If you remember, going into the NHL lockout, players were told to save for TWO seasons if they wanted to get their way.

I see what you're saying, but this is the same sport where a player (Sprewell) was being offered something like $20M/season at the tail of his career, and he had the gall to say something like, "I can't even consider that offer because I have to feed my family". Get real. This is the greediest bunch of athletes and they'll cave within 4 months when they realize they're losing $5M off the bat.

Ever wonder why NFL players can get cut at any time and MLB players have a much much better deal? The answer: Donald Fehr, current union boss for the NHLPA.

Yes, I was confused there. Buss used to own both the Kings and Lakers, but sold the Kings to McNall. Now, AEG owns the Kings and is a minority owner of the Lakers.

NBA players are paid SO much more relative to a lot of other sports. Some players receive 23 million/season. That's a lot...

And now, after the stick, the carrot to players . . . . . David Stern says a European expansion division is inevitable in the next 10 years.

Shouldn't the carrot be something the players want?

European expansion seems unfeasible for ANY north american league. Way to much travel unless you want to pull an MLB.
