Engagment ring size and price?
Just curious what most of you guys ended up paying for your engagment rings?
Trying to get a basis for what is a reasonable amount to spend on a ring. Thinking around 4 grand.

Depends on what you can afford. I spent under $2,000 on mine, and that was 9 years ago. My wife isn't really into jewellery much (didn't want a big solitaire as she think's they're ugle, for example) and probably wouldn't have wanted me to spend a ridiculous amount on her anyway.

Just got engagement myself recently, and my budget was around there as well (4-5k). What I naively didn't realize is that there is of course her wedding band to buy as well, and maybe yours too, depending on who pays for it. So there might be 3 rings to pony up for.
And jeebus, so many other unforeseen costs in a wedding that I had no clue about.

Isn't the general rule 1/4 - 1/3 of your gross annual salary?

I spent about $800 about 4 years ago. It was the exact ring she wanted so I wasn't going to complain.

That rule is stupid.
You'd be seeing people all over calgary with $25,000 on their fingers which is just plain ######ed.
I can't ever imagine ponying up 5 digits for a shiney piece of metal that isn't even insanely fast.

Have go agree. A lot of people make 50k+ but very few people are sporting 15k+ rings.
Are you sure you weren't talking about the cost of your wedding and the ring?

Get her something classy that you can be proud for her to show off. It doesn't have to break your bank to do it either, you can get a nice ring for 2-3k that she will be very happy with.
Or you could do what my pops did when he asked my mom, and get her a washer and dryer instead, that ol' romantic.

The only winning move is not to play. How about a nice game of chess?

I don't know, it's not my rule, I just heard it from a friend once. I thought it was insane when she mentioned it. And yes, she just meant the ring itself.
I know of about 5 or 6 people who got engaged and married in the past few years. Their rings range from about $3K to $15K. It just depends on how much your wife likes to show off the ring. The engagement ring is the female equivalent of a penis measuring contest.

The ring I bought is appraised at ~6k for 3 diamonds that total 1c, but I managed to get a screaming good deal on it . I would suggest Troy Shoppe Jewellers as a place to definitely put on your list to check out.

I'm guessing it was the DeBeers marketing dept that came up with this "rule".
Diamonds seem like the biggest scam going. The only reason a normally sane and logical man ponys up is to keep the peace and makes their girls happy. There's no way those prices make any sense to me.

Meh, think what you want, every penny I spent on my wife's ring was worth it.
I am sorry that you guys think it isn't a worth cause to spend money on and you would rather spend the money on a vehicle. It is nice having people comment on how nice her wedding/engagement rings are.
To each his own, I am happy that I spent the money that I did.

yeah, or you know, we can also spend it on something like a mortgage, kids college education, retirement.....nah, screw it, let's waste all our savings on something who's value is derived from how shiny it is.
