He hasn't scored in open play in 23 straight games, outside of last year which was an absolute blinder he has scored between 12-16 goals a year

someone is still going to pay more for him than Ronaldo got

ridiculous, Man U will be a better team if they swap him for players plus cash

Sky is saying that a Rooney for Benzema and Diarra and Cash deal has been discussed, even if the Glazers don't invest the money United are still a better team with Diarra and Benzema than with Rooney

I hate Man United but I hate Man City more, can we just remove Manchester altogether?

Horrible news and more to come surely. If he wants to leave, fine. A big loss to the club, but the club will be better off without him if that's the attitude he's going to carry, and the return we will get for him.

I'm going to have to buy tickets for Liverpool at Leeds for next season to cheer me up!

He's only got about 18 months left before a free transfer - they'll be lucky to get half of what Ronaldo brought in and their bargaining position will get weaker by the day.

I think they were expecting him to stay there for another 10 years and were caught a bit with their pants down from a business point of view, that is a massive massive blow to them, almost feel bad for them, then Owen Hargreaves pops into my head and I remember one of Fergies rants about the reffing and it eases.

Also worth noting is that 25% of any fee above what United paid for Rooney goes to Everton. So I assume United will look at selling him for under £27m or over £37m.

I think you are bang on, Matty81. United anticipated Rooney being there for at least a decade, and certainly not leaving in this fashion.

Also rumours floating around that Manchester City has already offered £50m.

18 months is still a long time

and 2 years the UEFA compliance comes in for Champions League/Europa play so a team like Man City needs to get their transfers in right now to try and get cash positive in the next few seasons

Man U will get at least 50m or players + cash valued at that

He has an 18 month contract but also has a buyout at the end of the season, in 6 months he can buyout the final year of his contract for 5 million pounds which will obviously be included in his wage packet by any new team if it comes to that which hopefully it doesn't for United.

If Ferguson and co. wait until the summer they will lose him for nothing and I think there is no way a team will pay 50 million pounds for 6 months even though he is a great player.

I find this very hard to believe. A clause like that is such a god awful inclusion in a contract of this type that if true it should really result in someone being sacked.

I would suggest that his current form may significantly dent his present value. No goals in open play for how long? Not to mention very, very poor national team form despite tons of opportunity.

Wayne Rooney could terminate his contract at Manchester United for around £5 million next summer if he chooses to buy out the final year under the 'Webster Ruling'.

Article 17 of FIFA's transfer rules dictate that a player who signed a contract before the age of 28 can buy himself out three years after the deal was signed, if he pays his final year's salary and a small compensation fee.

if that is true than they are screwed

no one is going to be in a rush in January, he will be ineligible for CL anyway, and they can get him on a free in the summer

he will end up going to the team he wants to no matter what

Yeah, the Webster Ruling stuff applies here as far as I have read. Bizarre clause and scary thought for United and its supporters.

Considering there is a Spending Review right now, getting rid of the entire city is a smashing idea!

Rooney releasing his statement now. Claims that United isn't ambitious enough for his likes.

In other words, they don't want to pay him Toure money.

Wow. Hes seriously throwing a fit over money? I'm surprised United didnt just pay him. Thats their style, they've been doing it for over a decade.

That said though, Toure is getting paid an insane amount of money. Absolutely insane.

City fans jumping the gun, although it seems like a real possibility at this point!

Rooney:

I was interested to hear what Sir Alex has had to say yesterday, and surprised by some of it. It is absolutley true, my agent and I have had a number of meetings with the club about a new contract. During those meetings in August, I asked for assurances that the continued ability of the club to attract the top players in the world. I never had anything but complete respect for Manchester United football club . How could I not have done, given its fantastic history, especially its last 6 years, which I've been lucky to play a part. For me, it's always about winning trophies, as the club has always done under Sir Alex Ferguson. because of that, I think the questions I ask were justified. However, when I met with David Gill last week, he did not give me any of the assurances I was seeking about the future squad. I then told him I would not be signing a new contract despite recent dificulties. I know I will always how Sir Alex a huge debt, he is a great manager and mentor who has helped and supported me from the day he signed me from Everton when I was 18. For Manchester United's sake, I wish he could go on forever because he is a genius.

If he goes to City, its a pure Money thing. United is going to win more trophies over the next 10 years than City in my opinion.

Not to mention, if he does this his life will be hell. The fans will HATE him. Its like jumping from Barca to Real or Liverpool to Everton. Or, as we've seen recently from Red Star to Partizan where the fans broke into his home!

That would be unreal. Hell, I hope he goes to City, that organization is such a god awful mess right now they'll never sort themselves out.
