I think they should just implement a notification system that your deal is about to expire and a way to extend it. What does a pact of cooperation/secrecy actually do?

So I first played the two easist settings, Settler, Cheiftain. I dominated the other players. I went to #3 Warlord 'easy' and I got destroyed.

So I had my frontier city and about 4 different military units around it. Then, a friendly AI player decided to settle a city about 3 tiles away. Right away he starts getting angry with me, talking about my military build up. I move 3 of the 4 units farther away, but I keep one there, because I already had a fort set up. It didn't take long for him to go off the deep end and send in his whole army and I was done

Is there a way to prevent that from happening?

Well, I think they're basically just small ways to improve relations with another Civ. The big thing is that if you break them it tends to give you a bad reputation amongst all the other Civs. The problem is that the AI has no diplomatic insight and will break these at will if they feel you're a threat to them (in spite of the fact that you've been allies for half a game).

The diplomacy is really broken in Civ5. The other Civs are now too focused about winning the game and do everything they can to target the strongest Civs in the game (which is usually the player). You can try and build up a relationship with another Civ, but if they feel you're a threat to win they do a complete 180 and start to hate your guts.

In my current game with India I've been extremely peaceful and tried to ally with Bismarck as he had a strong early military presence. I did all the pacts of secrecy he wanted, had a pact of cooperation, traded all my excess luxury resources to him, and even gave him gifts of gold when he requested them. So he starts invading a few Civs and gets a city only seperated by Persia from me. Soon after Persia and Siam (who borders me on the other side) tag-team and both declare war on me. My military was a little weak, but I figure that I spent the last 100 turns building a relationship with Bismarck and will just get him to help me out. Of course he declines. Then after I win the war and have a fairly strong military force now, I go to trade with Bismarck and he hates my guts and won't trade anything.

Almost finished another game, and my thoughts:

-AI still useless
-"Puppet Cities" are broken and boring. I can either take a 10 happiness hit (+culture hit) while I build a courthouse (long time for most), or just let it sit there and build garbage buildings that sing my economy. Lose/Lose sitation. I know its more realistic (you cant just take over an empire and have it become a happy/productful area instantaneously), but eeesh, its better to raze the city and just slap a new settlement.

Got bored today and decided i'd give civ 5 a crack again to see if my opinion of the game changed on the higher difficulty levels. I'll preface this by saying I've never managed to beat civ 3 or 4 on Diety even giving myself a juicy starting spot through the map builder or regenerating til i got a awesome setup. Immortal in Civ 4 I just managed to beat a few weeks ago in the run up to civ 5.

So I load up a small map(6 players, pangea style) on diety. Don't like my starting spot so i move a couple spots to see if anythings decent then plant my settler. Long story short it was over by domination before 500 BC.

After hundreds and hundreds of hours playing civ 1 2 3 and 4(+ alpha centauri of course) I've gotta say this has to be one of the most disappointing games I've ever purchased. Civ 5s going on the shelf after about 30 hours. Hopefully they do some patching in the future but as it stands now i can't even find this game enjoyable.

Lets go over the stupid things the AI did this game.

- 10 turns after Germany and I start a war against France who is the biggest at the time, he asks for peace offering me 2 of his cities, all his gold, 20 gold per turn(not a big deal since he had like +120) all of his strategic resources and all of his luxury resources. Of course this crippled him and 10 turns later i redeclared and wiped him off the map and just leave his capital for fun again.

- Right after that war my army is right beside Germany my former ally now so i delcare war to catch him off guard. Of course 15-20 turns later he does the same thing France just did 50 turns ago. gives me pretty much everything he has for 10 turns of peace. Of course i redeclare and finish him off and just leave his capital for fun again.

- Next up was the English, my militairy advisor told me he had a better army, not sure what he was smoking, but Englands army consisted of about 5 archers and 40 workers, bonus points for disbanding the workers because it gives you gold which you can buy more units with. Take over London and peace out with the English because it's getting monotanous at this point.

- Now all thats left is the Indians, their capital was at the front so i just take it with my army and run to take Berlin and Paris to end the game. Of course The Indians counter attack because and are just about to retake Delhi and I was annoyed because i had to go get it back again to end the game. But low and behold just as they polished off the 2 defensive units i left behind and are about to retake Delhi up pops the dipo screen and they offer me peace. ughh.

So then i go pop Paris and Berlin to finish the game off.

For those counting at home, the 6th civ was taken out by the French early which was why the French were the largest at the start.

The whole time I was fighting the English and Indians at the end, at not one point did Germany or France even try to settle another city. For over 100 turns they just sat there in their capital attempting the one city challenge.

Another incredibly stupid thing was that the city states had better city defences and stronger armies then the major powers, wtf.

The achievement you get on Steam is, Flawless strategy, but nothing could be further from the truth, after a few turns i got bored and auto'd both my workers and my scouts and they were useless all game but it still didn't matter. In the past civs it always seemed like to beat diety you needed to micro manage almost everything in your economy, which i suck at, which is why i never beat it before. Now it just doesn't matter because the AI is soooo bad.

Anyways, thoroughly disappointed with this game, but oh well atleast i can get on with real life til they drop a patch addressing some of these issues and making it challenging.

Continents is even worse because the AI is completely hopeless in the water.

Default just recieved it in the mail today

I had some paperwork that needed to get sent down to me here in Central America from my bank, so I got someone to pick up and include Civ V for me. Just arrived this morning. I was nervous about installing it because I don't quite meet the minimum requirements as outlined on the box (PC, but my processor is one step back from the recommended Athlon X2 64, mine's just an Athlon 64, with 3 gb Ram and 256mb nVidia graphics card), but it installed and started up OK. I played just a couple of tutorial turns to make sure it was working, and it seems fine. I'll try to hold off til the weekend so I don't lose myself completely. I am a huge fan of the past games, and look forward to this one. Probably will slow my system down quite a bit by the time I am heavily into the timeline with so much happening, but so be it. Can't wait.

New patch is in the works. Major thing I noticed is that you will now be able to sell buildings.

The AI for attacking is horrible, putting their canons/artillery 1 hex away from your city instead of 2.

I'm finding the game a lot easier than Civ 4 because of the terrible AI and the off-balanced city states. (looking at you Maritime states)

And as pointed out in the civfanatics forums

Civ 5: Total War

After playing three real games, I'm left disappointed. The AI is very poor.

But also, I found that I played for hours on end and I had soo little to show for it. And once I knew that I would destroy everyone, I had little desire to play the game through.

Maybe it's just not my type of game. I've played a little Age of Empires, Starcraft, Sim City 1 back in the day, but nothing else till now. I should stick to my shooters

The DLC is all cool and everything ... but really, the AI needs a patch most desperately.

The first big patch could be released as early as next week. Included are some major AI changes apparently.

Agree. The game itself needs patches and not cash grabs. I've quit Civ 5. Unfortunately it means nothing since it's not a monthly fee game so they've already profited from me.

Such a disappointment. Unfinished, unpolished and just plain bad in general.

Edit: JayP - I'll believe it when I see it. I'm quite jaded and frustrated over this game, and especially since nothing has been done in a month. (for problems that must have extended back into beta and alpha).

Here's the list of fixes coming in the patch; some have been added to the list on Oct 14: http://forums.2kgames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=94438

I have - the secret is to completely ignore building anything but military, always be at war, raze all the enemy cities (except the capitals), and win via domination. It's not difficult, just boring. All the higher levels can be won this way, it just takes longer the more enemy units you have to lure into obvious traps and destroy.

The problem is that if you go the builder route instead, the AI WILL attack you with ridiculous amounts of units and you will probably lose and also be bored. I've found the only way to do builder is to use an archipelago map, wipe anyone else off your island, and then the AI is so inept at sea warfare that you should have no trouble keeping any invaders at bay whilst you develop your kingdom.
