Fair enough, I see your POV there Dis.

I'm pretty stubborn, though, so I liked the unsubstantiated rhetoric at the end! Even though most of us know it's true.
Well, don't mistake my POV regarding Daradon's letter as having anything to do with my own personal views on the war in Iraq. It didn't come into play in my thought process.

Just to be clear.

My two cents...

O'Reilly is a bordeline idiot, as are the majority of Americans. I swear, the average IQ in this country is 90. They have no clue about what goes on in their own country let alone the outside world. Its embarassing to try and debate an issue with the average American as they have no idea what is going on. The pat answer on Foreign Affairs is "nukem". Nothing more needs to be said after that.

O'Reilly wants to point at Olympic medal counts as proof of superiority as a nation? Hmmmm, that's funny, Adolf Hitler said the same thing before the Olympics in Berlin. The communist nations tried to use that logic as well to prove their system was superior to the western way as well. So O'Reilly is now using the same dogma preached by Nazi's and Communists. Borderline idiot? No, full fledged idiot now.

Oh yeah, I hear that all the time.

Where do you come up with this stuff?

Someone should tell this guy that there are 2 Olympics because I didn't see him mentioning the other one that really make his omnipotent country look average at best.
If he wants to use Australia's population as an example against Canada's medal count, why not use it against his own country. The U.S. has 15x the pop of Australia yet only barely 2x the medal count. The U.S. has 10x the pop of Canada yet only 8.5x the medal count. The U.S. trails both of us. Add to that America's lack of will to stop it's athletes and chemists from producing and using cutting edge performance enhancers and you have a much clearer picture of America's place in the sporting world. It's not as great as he thinks and they had to cheat to get that far.

EVERYONE has the dumb sports journalist, and according to the law of averages atleast one will hit the big time.

Hello Mr. O'Reilly!

back home in Sydney, we have Russ Doyle. In my 22 years on this planet I have diagreed with EVERYTHING that man ever wrote... well one exception. I then thought about my view on Grady Little not being rehired in Boston, and said maybe a change is what the Bo-Sox need.

his coloum is: Nobody Asked But... (Russ Doyle) to which I reply "Nobody Cares But..."

Alas I move to Halifax, I get away from Mr. Doyle, and "Hello Alex J. Walling!"

This is the man who snuck into the Halifax Metro Centre and used a pocked sized digital camera to get his own photograph of the Mooseheads sitting for their team picture, because he thought the team would charge an arm and a leg for a copy. I do my best NOT to read his articles at all, but it's fun to go onto the Halifax Mooseheads messageboard and hear about them bicker over how dumb he is.

O'Reilly is only Doyle, and Walling, but in American form, and he hit the big time. Who's your version in Calgary?

If Australia is so great why is half its population in Banff and Whistler all winter, and Europe in the summer?

And BTW, the US did not do much different than Canada at the Athens Olympics if you look at medals per 1,000,000 population.

Yeah, but how about if you look at medals per capita?

I know I know it's been said several times but I can't believe he is taken seriously by anyone. He probably doesn't even take himself seriously.

If you take a look at the guy's education it's apparent that he's not a fool or a moron. I swear, one day he's going to come out and say "you actually believed what I said"?

Same thing. Medals per 1,000,000 population is a per capita survey.

Actually, Canada did better than the US per capita:

Canada = 0.369 medals per 1,000,000

US = 0.352 medals per 1,000,000

The other thing that people (and Canadians are just as guilty) ignore about Canada is that probably 1 in 2 of our best athletes concentrates solely on hockey (on the men's side at least). In Australia, they concentrate on swimming to a similar degree, i.e. swimmers are their athletic heros. One medal for hockey, about 80 for swimming. Another example - Norway. Their best athletes end up in cross country skiing, biathlon, etc. and they clean up at the Olympics. My thesis statement is that any country that concentrates its national energy on sports that aren't big Olympic sports will underperform relative to a country that concentrates on the Olympics. This also explains why the US underperforms relative to a lot of countries, including Canada, on a per capita basis. Football, baseball and basketball eat up a lot of amazing athletes, but produce 4 medals maximum.

I've thought the same thing for a long time

how many total medals are awarded in swimming? LOTS. Australia is a summer nation, surrounded by water

Imagine if in the Winter olympics they had all of the following medal events: Slapshot, Wrist shot, target shooting, backwards skating (50 m), backwards skating (100 m), cross-over skating, bodychecking, breakaway, goalie saving, faceoffs, pylon deking, hockeyfighting, deflections, changing on the fly etc. Canada, and a select few other countries would eat up the medals

but it doesn't work that way. there seem to be a few sports, both summer and winter, that have a disproportionate amount of medals associated with them

I like to call Bill; Bill O'Lielly.

Read "Liars and the Lying Liars who tell them." By Al Franken. A histerical book.
